Washing Machine Tariffs Will Hurt Americans

“The protectionist move against LG and Samsung comes, perversely, just as those companies are set to employ thousands of Americans in Tennessee and South Carolina.  It may also inadvertently put the final nail in the coffin of one of the longest-standing bastions of the American service industry, Sears Holdings Corp. Trump should reject the remedy proposal put forth by the International Trade Commission. Making it more expensive for LG to import the washers it produces for Kenmore, one of Sears’ most popular product lines, will jeopardize the retailer’s efforts to revitalize its brand.”

Here’s What the World’s Central Banks Really Think About Bitcoin

“The guardians of the global economy have two sets of issues to address. First is what to do, if anything, about the emergence and growth of the private cryptocurrencies that are grabbing more and more attention — with bitcoin climbing above $10,000. The second question is whether to issue official versions.”

Cubans Are Starting Small Businesses, but the U.S. Is Hurting Them

“The embargo is a failed foreign policy that’s only served to punish the Cuban people and isolate the United States internationally. And rolling back Obama’s opening there is a major blow for diplomacy, people-to-people ties, and — most of all — Cuba’s new private businesses.”

IRS To Extract $207 Billion From Small Businesses By Enforcing Obamacare

“The employer mandate is lucrative for the government. It is expected to bring in penalty payments of $207 billion over the next decade, according to projections by the Congressional Budget Office.  Businesses will generally incur fines of around $2,000 per employee (excluding the first 30) if they do not offer qualifying coverage to nearly all of those who work an average of 30 or more hours a week.  The penalty is activated if at least one employee then buys insurance on the health law’s marketplace and receives a subsidy for it.  The per-employee fine increases each year, and can add up quickly: A company with 100 workers that ignored the law this year would owe a penalty of more than $158,000.”

James Bovard: Facebook/Russia farce shows lawmaker deviousness, demagoguery

“Almost half of millennials supported restricting freedom of speech on social media, according to a recent survey.  Congressional threats have probably already done long-term damage to corporate spines. It would be naive to expect Facebook, Twitter, or other social media companies to take heroic stands in favor of free speech. But it would be even more naive to expect anything good to result from permitting politicians to decimate freedom in the name of democracy.”

Big-Spending Republicans Seek Tax Hikes on Blue States

“If your income is between $100,000 and $200,000, for example, those extra taxes may represent what you would have saved for your child’s college tuition, meaning you’ll have to borrow it instead. Or, it might mean the difference between hiring that extra employee to grow your small business.  It’s precisely these people, who are by no means rich, who will bear the brunt of the GOP’s politically-motivated tax redistribution. And it just so happens that policies like this one further insulate the very richest 1 percent from the competition represented by upwardly mobile 10 percenters, many of whom work seven days a week to rise out of paycheck-to-paycheck, wage-earner status.”
