“Although Obama denies that bombing has the purpose of regime change in Syria, it cannot be separated from that purpose. This is because Obama has openly called for Assad to step down. He made this call while ignoring elections and constitutional changes in Syria approved by the public. Well before the chemical event, he planned and considered a range of other acts of war such as a no-fly zone and even partition of the country into rebel and non-rebel areas. Obama has supported rebel groups in Syria by various means, including proxy countries like Saudi Arabia and Quatar, plus training rebels in Turkey and Jordan.”

Bombing Syria Is An Act of War

Looking for the lowest-cost way to accomplish this objective (without explicitly using American forces), the president then supported the rebels covertly. When the rebels lost ground in the last year, the president looked for a pretext. The chemical event, no matter how it came to be, is that pretext.
Although the president has tried to sell bombing as a limited one-time event in response to a chemical event, none of the major players believes this. They know that it is an act of war. The president further acknowledges that it is an act of war by seeking congressional approval.”

Iran claims U.S. Congress not ‘authorized’ to authorize Syria strikes

“The US Congress is not authorised to green-light American military strikes against Syria as any such action would be in violation of international law, Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said Sunday.  ‘Mr Obama cannot interpret and construe international law for his own (benefit),’ Zarif told reporters after a late afternoon cabinet meeting, the ISNA news agency reported.  ‘Congress cannot authorise strikes (against Syria) and that attack would be in violation of international law,’ he said, explaining that ‘only the UN Security Council — under special conditions — can issue authorization’ for the use of force to restore international peace.”

Swiss government blocks arms sales to U.S. over human rights concerns

“The Swiss government regularly comes in for criticism over the export of firearms. A blocked sale of weapon components to the United States has recently put the spotlight on little known aspects of the global arms trade.  The government in January vetoed the deal for handgun parts worth more than CHF400,000 on the grounds that the handguns – assembled in the US for export to Saudi Arabia – could be used to violate human rights.”

Human rights court blocks extradition of U.K.-based terror suspect to U.S.

“Extraditing a UK-based terror suspect to an American ‘supermax’ high security prison would constitute ‘inhuman or degrading treatment’, the European court of human rights (ECHR) has ruled.  The Strasbourg court barred the removal of Haroon Aswat, whose nationality is unknown, from Broadmoor psychiatric hospital to the US on account of his severe mental illness.  Aswat, who suffers from paranoid schizophrenia, has been indicted in the US as a co-conspirator in a plan to establish a jihad training camp in Oregon.  He was arrested in 2005 in Britain following a request from US authorities for extradition. His lawyers have resisted his removal since then in a series of appeals.”

The report’s first ‘finding’ states, ‘U.S. forces, in many instances, used interrogation techniques on detainees that constitute torture. American personnel conducted an even larger number of interrogations that involved ‘cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment.’ Both categories of actions violate U.S. laws and international treaties. British prisoner: ‘People are dying’ in Guantanamo Bay from systemic torture

The British government has lobbied Washington on his behalf, stating on Sunday: ‘we want him released and returned to the UK as a matter of urgency’. The UK Foreign Office said it continued to monitor Aamer’s condition but stressed any decision to release him remained in the hands of the US government.  In the meantime, the father of three continues to languish in a cell. He has never seen his youngest son, Faris, born while Aamer was in captivity, now living with family in London.”

Gitmo inmate who was deemed no threat on hunger strikes and force feedings

Sometimes they come during the night, as late as 11 pm, when I’m sleeping. There are so many of us on hunger strike now that there aren’t enough qualified medical staff members to carry out the force-feedings… They are feeding people around the clock just to keep up. ‘ Like most of the striking inmates, he has never been charged with a crime or put on trial, and is not viewed as a threat to US national security.”

New leak: NSA spied on French diplomats and Al Jazeera

“In 2010 the NSA monitored the internal computer network of France’s diplomats and that of the ministry itself by accessing so-called virtual private networks (VPN), a tool that generally offers a secure internet connection to users. The ‘top secret’ NSA document  said French diplomatic offices in New York and Washington had bugs installed on the premises and that screenshots were taken from computer monitors in United Nations offices. Qatari-funded broadcaster Al-Jazeera was another NSA target, the magazine said, with its internal communications system successfully hacked due to its ‘high potential as sources of intelligence,’ according to a March 2006 NSA document.”
