Bankrupt California city facing legalizing marijuana for revenue

“The bankrupt California city of San Bernardino has a new idea for raising revenue – legalize medical marijuana.  Ironically, the plan was spurred by concerns about not having enough resources to crack down on the illegal medical marijuana dealers springing up all over town.  So the city is now looking at legalizing the sellers, and using tax proceeds to enforce the regulations.  Police have reported as many as 20 illegal storefronts in town at any given time, said the city attorney. ‘We have in this city a proliferation – and a lot of cities in California are experiencing it – of illegal medical marijuana dispensaries. These people are defiant and they are opening up these things right and left.'”

Colorado’s neighboring sheriffs lamenting their own marijuana arrests?

“Sheriff John Jenson watched the 2012 election returns crawling across his TV screen in this rural area just over the Colorado border. Tuned to a Denver news station, he soon realized Colorado voters were about to legalize recreational marijuana.  That’s when he turned to his wife and started to swear.  ‘The drug war in this country used to be along the U.S.-Mexican border. Now it’s eight miles away.’  Law enforcement officers in the smaller, often isolated counties in states ringing Colorado say their departments shudder under the weight of Colorado pot flowing illegally across the border. Drug arrests are rising, straining already strapped budgets in places where marijuana remains illegal.”

Sen. Blumenthal Wants You To Know Train Safety Is Very Important

“During a track-side speech on railway safety Friday, Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) unintentionally demonstrated just how important railway safety is. Watch what happens as soon as the surprised senator says: ‘Safety, as you know, is paramount.’ Yes it is, senator, yes it is.  The video may go viral, but not for the reasons you would hope for.”

Ron Paul, Congress Believes: Spy On Thee, But Not Me

131203122616-ron-paul-bitcoin-620xa1

“The reaction of Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein to recent revelations that the CIA secretly searched Senate Intelligence Committee computers reveals much about what Washington thinks about the rest of us. ‘Spy on thee, but not on me!’  Feinstein’s hypocrisy on this issue is astounding. She is an enthusiastic backer of the National Security Agency spying on the rest of us, but when the tables are turned, and her staff is the target, she becomes irate. But there is more to it than that. There is an attitude in Washington that the laws Congress passes do not apply to its members. They can trample our civil liberties, they believe, but it should never affect their own freedom.”

California’s anti-game senator Leland Yee arrested for corruption

“In a bid to become Secretary of State, Yee apparently ‘solicited money from undercover FBI agents’ and engaged in ‘a discussion with the undercover agents about an illegal gun-trafficking deal.’   Yee represents District 8, which includes video game development hotbeds like San Francisco and San Mateo County. Gamers know him as the man who put forth the much-publicized violent game law that the United States Supreme Court struck down in 2011.  ‘Gamers have got to just quiet down,’ Yee said at the time. ‘Gamers have no credibility in this argument. This is all about their lust for violence and the industry’s lust for money. This is a billion-dollar industry. This is about their self-interest.'”

Jon Stewart calls out Senator Feinstein for CIA hacking hypocrisy

“The moment that a notoriously pro-surveillance member of Congress spent nearly an hour excoriating the CIA for breaking into Senate computers, a Daily Show sketch became inevitable. Jon Stewart doesn’t disappoint. The best reason to watch it, though, is that it’s actually a fantastic rundown of the whole story, from Bush-era torture practices to the CIA ‘assassinating data’ and then blaming IT administrators. If you’re looking to chew through Feinstein’s long, dense presentation, it’s the best appetizer you could possibly get.”

Feinstein accuses CIA of hacking Congress, intimidating staff

“Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), chair of the Intelligence Committee, has accused the CIA of searching Senate computers for copies of an internal agency interrogation report, accusing the CIA of violating both anti-hacking laws and the Constitution. In a speech on the Senate floor this morning, Feinstein corroborated reports made earlier by McClatchy, saying that the CIA had first stonewalled committee members who were trying to investigate its interrogation practices, rifled through files to figure out what they knew, and then turned around and accused them of stealing the report, intimidating staff in the process.”

Top UK official involved in national porn filter arrested for child porn

“A top British government aide who helped create 10 Downing Street’s controversial policy to censor online pornography for the majority of British Internet users has resigned from his post on Monday after being arrested last month on charges of possessing child pornography.  Patrick Rock, a longstanding Tory adviser to Prime Minister David Cameron, had served as the deputy director of policy.  The prime minister’s office confirmed to British press that it had been ‘made aware of a potential offense relating to child abuse imagery’ on February 12, and Rock was arrested the next day at home.”

Associates defend anti-gun activist found carrying gun inside school

“He was a well-known face in the movement for the SAFE Act, the state law that made carrying a gun on school property a felony. He was also a familiar presence in the hallways of the city’s Harvey Austin Elementary School, where he worked in the after-school program and mentored students.  No one imagined that on Thursday he would show up at the school in possession of a gun, touching off an hours-long lockdown, search and ultimately his arrest on two felony charges.  He was among local activists who stood with Assemblywoman Crystal Peoples-Stokes last year lobbying for a law that would make possessing a gun on school property a felony.”

Police Officers Explain Why Millennials Make Terrible Cops

“As baby-boomers in departments look toward retirement, issues surrounding differences among officers who grew up as Generation X-ers or Millennials appear to be surfacing. Veteran SWAT officers within the group of attendees say that too many new recruits look at SWAT as a ‘stepping stone’ or ‘résumé builder’ to other areas of law enforcement, so finding new recruits who are willing to stay on SWAT teams for the long haul is becoming more difficult.  Additionally, new recruits are likely to be college graduates with a different mindset than their predecessors of 20 to 45 years ago.”
