Side Effect Of Legal Pot: Police Budgets Take A Hit

“The decriminalization of pot also stands to remove a funding source for police: property forfeitures from drug dealers. Such funding is ‘going up in smoke,’ The Wall Street Journal reports.  Of the $6.5 billion in asset forfeitures in drug cases from 2002-2012, marijuana accounted for $1 billion, the Journal says, citing data from the U.S. Justice Department.  And while most cash generated from drug-related property forfeitures goes to the law enforcement agency that made the bust, tax money from legal marijuana sales goes to state and local governments. Police may get only a share of that money, or none at all.”

With Affordable Care Act, Canceled Policies for New York Professionals

“Many in New York’s professional and cultural elite have long supported President Obama’s health care plan. But now, to their surprise, thousands of writers, opera singers, music teachers, photographers, doctors, lawyers and others are learning that their health insurance plans are being canceled and they may have to pay more to get comparable coverage, if they can find it.  Some have received notices already; others, whose plans have not yet expired, will soon receive letters in the mail. It is unclear exactly how many New Yorkers are affected; according to state health officials, as many as 400,000 independent practitioners get health insurance through job-related group plans.”

There’s a £60m Bitcoin heist going down right now: watch in real-time

“Sheep Marketplace closed down over the weekend after someone got away with 96,000 bitcoins – and angry users are chasing him around the internet.  In a normal robbery that money would be gone by now, but it isn’t. Bitcoin is pseudonymous, not anonymous, and bitcoins can’t just disappear. It works because each and every transaction is public and visible to each and every other person using the Bitcoin network, and a person is only as anonymous as their link to their wallet.  Right now, as you’re reading this, you can watch as the the thief starts trying to move their bitcoins on again – it’s currently down to 92,000 bitcoins and dropping as smaller chunks begin going out.”

Police dept. loses insurance, shuts down after lawsuits against 2 officers

“The Point Marion Police Department in Fayette County closed its doors after settling lawsuits against police officers.  ‘We had to lay off the officers due to the fact that we do not have police liability insurance,’ said Point Marion Borough Manager Arthur Strimel. Strimel said the insurance carrier dropped the department after paying two settlements against the department’s only two police officers, including Kevin Lukart, who has been in trouble before.  Lukart had been fired from the Apollo Police Department after he was charged with exposing himself to a 17-year-old.  He was also fired from the Braddock Police Department after a news camera captured Lukart punching a man in handcuffs.”

UN Drug Bureaucrats Fret About Uruguay’s Marijuana Legalization

“Uruguay is blowing off the International Narcotics Control Board (INCB) as it prepares to become the first country to legalize marijuana commerce, and the INCB is ‘concerned.’ The South American nation failed to send a delegation to Vienna to listen to the INCB complain about its plans. The INCB is also ‘very concerned that the draft legislation currently being considered in Uruguay would, if adopted, legalize production, sale and consumption of cannabis for recreational purposes.’  Uruguay’s marijuana legalization bill, backed by President Jose Mujica, has already passed the lower house of parliament and is set for a vote soon in the upper house.”

Meltdowns Hobble NSA Data Center

“Chronic electrical surges at the massive new data-storage facility central to the National Security Agency’s spying operation have destroyed hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of machinery and delayed the center’s opening for a year, according to project documents and current and former officials. There have been 10 meltdowns in the past 13 months that have prevented the NSA from using computers at its new Utah data-storage center, slated to be the spy agency’s largest. One project official described the electrical troubles—so-called arc fault failures—as ‘a flash of lightning inside a 2-foot box.’ These failures create fiery explosions, melt metal and cause circuits to fail, the official said.”

Can the Feds Spend $3.3M in Seized Digital Currency?

“Uncle Sam has seized bitcoins in the past, but nothing so large as the stash from the Silk Road bust. Like the rest of the world, the government is struggling to come to terms with this brave new currency. With the feds belatedly pushing for regulation of the bitcoin system, many people are having trouble converting their digital currency into cash. If the feds then decide to cash out their own bitcoins, you’ve got a conundrum.  Given the murky regulatory landscape surrounding bitcoins, the government could opt to destroy the stash — or let it sit on the internet forever, doing nothing.  And — barring a crash — the longer they sit there, the more they’ll be worth.”

Silk Road supporters are trolling the FBI with Bitcoin

“Bitcoin users began sending the FBI small fractions of Bitcoin along with public comments to the federal law enforcement agency. A number of the comments include links to news articles about the Central Intelligence Agency supporting the family of drug lords in Afghanistan or helping Contras traffic cocaine in the U.S. A few railed against drug prohibition, while others simply made fart jokes. Some have expressed support for Ross William Ulbricht, the 29-year-old accused of running Silk Road and hiring hitmen to kill two people. And a handful have even used the opportunity to promote their causes and small businesses.”

Cop Beaten Up on Camera While Bystanders Watch; No One Calls 911

“When a Philadelphia transit officer attempted to detain a ticket-scam suspect near a train station platform last week, surveillance video records the suspect turning on the cop and wrestling him to the ground, pinning him between a glass barrier and a bench.  But the video also shows a crowd of at least seven transit customers observing the fight, including one who pulled out her phone to record the incident.  Notably a similar incident happened at the same train station last week, WTXF reported. And again video captured two plain-clothes officers getting beaten up in front of a much larger crowd at Cecil B. Moore station in north Philadelphia.”
