Psychedelic Science: Magic Mushrooms

“Serious study of magic mushrooms essentially ended when the compounds psilocybin and psylocin were listed as Schedule I drugs in 1971. However, people around the world have used magic mushrooms with the goals of expanding consciousness and achieving spiritual growth ever since it was popularized by the hippies in the the 1960s. Despite its illegal status, researchers have once again started studying the effects of psilocybin on humans. ReasonTV caught up with Roland Griffiths of Johns Hopkins University and Robin Carhart-Harris of Imperial College London at the Psychedelic Science 2013 conference to learn what’s happening at the cutting edge of psilocybin research.”

Cancer Researchers Are On The Verge Of Human Trials With Cannabis

“Dr. Sean McAllister, of the California Pacific Medical Center (CPMC), has spent nearly a decade studying the effects of cannabidiol – a chemical found in marijuana – on aggressive types of breast and brain cancer.  His research has already shown that cannabidiol (CBD) can reduce the spread of cancer to other parts of the body. Although, so far, he’s only been able to study animal and cell culture models. Now he says his team is ready to prove it in humans. Since last year, Dr. McAllister has been going through the difficult and lengthy process of initiating clinical trials. With study designs complete, funding seems to be the only obstacle that remains.”

THC Concentrations Don’t Predict Driving Impairment

“Earlier this month two states — Montana and Oklahoma — enacted per se legislation prohibiting drivers from operating a motor vehicle if they possessed trace quantities of cannabinoids in their system. Under these new laws, prosecutors no longer have to prove that a defendant is behaviorally impaired by cannabis or that he or she presents a legitimate traffic safety risk. In fact, Oklahoma’s new law even disallows drivers from operating a vehicle with any detectable level of THC or its inert metabolite (byproduct) carboxy THC (aka THC-COOH) — a nonpsychoactive compound that has been documented to linger in the urine of former cannabis consumers.”

Scientists discover DNA body clock

“Horvath looked at the DNA of nearly 8,000 samples of 51 different healthy and cancerous cells and tissues. Specifically, he looked at how methylation, a natural process that chemically modifies DNA, varied with age.  The clock has already revealed some intriguing results. Tests on healthy heart tissue showed that its biological age – how worn out it appears to be – was around nine years younger than expected. Female breast tissue aged faster than the rest of the body, on average appearing two years older. Diseased tissues also aged at different rates, with cancers speeding up the clock by an average of 36 years.”

Frequent fliers often have sworn-by practices to combat jet lag, whether it’s adjusting a sleep schedule days before a trip, taking the hormone melatonin, seeking out bright light at certain times, or forcing the body to eat and sleep on local time immediately upon arrival.  What works best? The news from most researchers appears to be that the best formula is a combination of all of these tactics.”

US Supreme Court Rejects Marijuana Reclassification Appeal

“The US Supreme Court Monday declined to hear an appeal from medical marijuana advocacy groups who had challenged the DEA’s decision to maintain marijuana’s status as a Schedule I drug under the Controlled Substances Act, the category reserved for the most dangerous substances. The court denied in summary order a petition for a writ of certiorari from the groups, led by Americans for Safe Access, which had sought Supreme Court review of a DC Circuit Court of Appeals decision upholding the DEA’s ruling that a change in marijuana’s classification required the Food and Drug Administration’s recognition of acceptable medical uses for the drugs.”

During the shutdown, some scientists can’t talk about science

“I’m a guest of honor this weekend at the Dallas’s Fencon this weekend, and I’ve just learned that some of the other speakers won’t be able to talk, thanks to the government shutdown. They’re government space scientists, and the 143-year-old Antideficiency Act makes it a crime (punishable by fines and imprisonment) for government employees to volunteer to do their own jobs (which, in their cases, includes talking about science to the public). The law dates back to the Lincoln administration, and was aimed at stopping fraudsters who did ‘government’ business, then presented a bill for services that hadn’t been contracted but had nevertheless been performed.”

French Study Investigates Danger Of Speed Limit Fixation

“In jurisdictions with automated speed enforcement, cruise control can save drivers from receiving a nasty surprise in the mail. A study released July 30 from the Vinci Autoroutes Foundation concluded that this reliance on cruise control can actually make driving more dangerous.  These findings are consistent with those of the late Paul Smith, founder of the Safe Speed road safety campaign, who calculated that each time a driver looked down to check his speedometer in a 200 yard speed camera zone — each glance takes about 1.1 seconds — he loses 13 percent of the time available to observe the road for hazards. The UK Department for Transport lists driver inattention as the cause of 25% of accidents.”

Twelve years after 9/11, we still have no idea how to fight terrorism.

“The seven studies include among them 86 findings about the effectiveness of counterterrorism programs, and those findings are startling. Lum, Kennedy and Sherley report that the average effect of the programs examined was negative. That is, the intervention was found to increase terrorist incidents rather than reduce them. The results varied by the type of intervention, but not in a way that should give us any comfort about our strategy.   It’s scandalous that we spend billions every year on counterterrorism but barely spend any effort on evaluating whether what we’re doing works.”

Researchers create battery that recycles sewage into energy

“They hope their technique could be used in wastewater treatment facilities and to break down organic pollutants in the ‘dead zones’ of oceans and lakes where fertilizer runoff has depleted oxygen, suffocating marine life.  However, for now the team from Stanford University have started small, with a prototype about the size of a D-cell battery, consisting of two electrodes — one positive and one negative — plunged into a bottle of wastewater, filled with bacteria.  As the bacteria consume the organic material, the microbes cluster around the negative electrode, throwing off electrons, which are captured in turn by the positive electrode.”
