“The Trump administration put new requirements in place on Friday for the 38 countries participating in the U.S. Visa Waiver Program, including that they use U.S. counterterrorism data to screen travelers, officials said. The United States will also start assessing VWP countries on their safeguards against ‘insider threats’ at their airports, especially those with direct flights to the United States, officials said.”

TSA Plans to Use Face Recognition to Track Americans Through Airports

“CBP wants to vastly expand its program to cover domestic flights as well. It wants to create a ‘biometric’ pathway that would use face recognition to track all travelers—including U.S. citizens—through airports from check-in, through security, into airport lounges, and onto flights. And it wants to partner with commercial airlines and airports to do just that.  Congress seems poised to provide both TSA and CBP with the statutory authority to support these plans.”

New Measures Impose Interviews On Travelers Returning To The US

“If you’re traveling back to the US on or after Thursday, expect a broad range of new measures, including short interviews.  According to Airlines for America, the new policies will affect 325,000 airline passengers on about 2,000 commercial flights arriving daily in the US. Those figures include flights on 180 airlines from 280 airports in 105 countries. That’s a whole lot of people on a significant number of flights, so be aware that you may experience more delays than usual.  Lufthansa said that travelers could expect to encounter short interviews at check-in or at the gate, and passengers on Lufthansa’s Swiss should check-in at least 90 minutes before departure.”

FAA Proposes Worldwide Laptop Ban For Checked Bags On Int’l Flights

“The proposal, which will no doubt upset some frequent travelers, will be considered by the United Nations in the coming weeks.  The FAA is concerned about the lithium-ion batteries that are common in electronic devices like laptops. Tests conducted by the agency have concluded that when large electronics overheat in luggage they run the risk of combustion when packed with aerosol canisters like hairspray and dry shampoo.”

US plans ‘enhanced security’ for air travel from 105 countries

“The new measures will affect 105 countries hosting approximately 280 airports, 180 airlines, and about 2,100 daily flights carrying 325,000 US-bound passengers.  DHS already has in place a policy that bars electronic devices larger than a cell phone from Turkey and several Middle Eastern airports. The UK has a similar policy, affecting airports in six countries.”

The DEA’s $4 Billion Warrantless Cash Grab

“Federal law enforcement officers are raking in hundreds of millions of dollars a year with little oversight or constitutional protections for property owners.  Most of these types of seizures are never challenged.  The I.G. found petitions were filed in only 20 percent of the DEA cash seizures it reviewed. Of those that were challenged, though, 40 percent saw money fully or partially returned to the owner, indicating that there may be a significant number of unfounded seizures going unchallenged.”
