Fear sells.  This didn’t stop with Bush … politicians are still still fearmongering every chance they get. (Indeed, the biggest fearmongerers themselves quietly back terrorism).  Sociologists have shown that fear of terrorism makes people stupid and malleable.”

Angry South Koreans flood banks after data leak

“Tens of thousands of South Koreans flooded banks and call centres on Tuesday to cancel their credit cards following the unprecedented theft of the personal data of at least 20 million people.  The panic has its roots in the arrest earlier this month of an employee from personal credit ratings firm Korea Credit Bureau, on charges of stealing and selling data from customers of three credit card firms while working as a temporary consultant.  All special call centres run by the three firms were busy on Tuesday and some of their websites could not be accessed at all.  Dozens of their top executives have tendered their resignations, while the government is expected to announce special measures.”

Bank data of 20 million customers leaked in South Korea

“An employee from personal credit ratings firm Korea Credit Bureau (KCB) has been arrested and accused of stealing the data from customers of three credit card firms while working for them as a temporary consultant.  Seoul’s financial regulators on Sunday confirmed the number of affected users as at least 20 million, in a country of 50 million. The stolen data includes the customers’ names, social security numbers, phone numbers, and credit card numbers and expiration dates, the Financial Supervisory Service (FSS) said in a statement.   The information was taken from the internal servers of KB Kookmin Card, Lotte Card, and NH Nonghyup Card.”

Bernard Madoff Haunts JPMorgan’s Earnings

“For years, convicted fraudster Bernard Madoff, who ran the biggest Ponzi scheme in history, claimed from prison that JPMorgan Chase & Co., knew about the scam that he conducted through the bank. Madoff continues to haunt the nation’s biggest bank.  A few days ago JPMorgan Chase entered into a deferred prosecution agreement with federal prosecutors in Manhattan to resolve criminal allegations related to the bank’s relationship with Madoff and agreed to pay $2.6 billion to various federal authorities and plaintiffs in civil cases. Legal expenses, including the recently anounced Madoff settlements, cost JPMorgan $1.1 billion, or 27 cents per share in the fourth quarter.”

JPMorgan CEO: Target breach is a wake-up call

“More Target-sized security breaches will happen if banks and retail stores don’t start working together to further protect customers’ data, JPMorgan Chase’s CEO Jamie Dimon said Tuesday.  JPMorgan has replaced 2 million credit and debit cards as a result of the Target breach, Dimon said. That number is expected to rise. JPMorgan is the world’s largest issuer of credit cards.  Dimon expects that cybercrimes such as the Target breach will become more common if retailers and banks do not work on security, he said.  ‘This might be a chance for retailers and banks, for once, to work together as opposed to suing each other like we’ve been doing the last decade,’ Dimon said.”

NSA uses radio-waves for surveillance, cyber-attacks on offline systems

“The secret technology uses covert radio waves transmitted from small circuit boards and USB cards clandestinely inserted into targeted computers.  The waves can then be sent to a briefcase-sized relay station intelligence agencies can set up just miles away.  The radio frequency technology – which often needs to be physically inserted by a spy, manufacturer or unwitting user – has helped US spies access computers that global adversaries have gone to great lengths to protect from surveillance or cyber-attack.  The NSA has condemned use of similar software by Chinese attackers against American companies or government agencies.”

Dell apologizes for ‘inconvenience’ caused by NSA backdoor

One of the most alarming methods of attack discussed during his address, however, comes as a result of all but certain collusion on the part of major United States tech companies.”

Apple says never worked with NSA on iPhone hacks

“Apple Inc has never worked with the U.S. National Security Agency and is unaware of efforts to target its smartphones, the company said in response to reports that the spy agency had developed a system to hack into and monitor iPhones.  Germany’s Der Spiegel reported this week that a secretive unit of the NSA, which is under fire for the extent and depth of its spying programs around the world, makes specialized gear and software to infiltrate and monitor a plethora of computing devices, including mobile phones.”
