And no matter what walls companies erect, the NSA’s specialists seem already to have gotten past them.  This is the impression gained from flipping through the 50-page document. The list reads like a mail-order catalog, one from which other NSA employees can order technologies from the ANT division for tapping their targets’ data. The catalog even lists the prices for these electronic break-in tools, with costs ranging from free to $250,000.”

Rise of Private Security Is Citizen Response to Declining Police Service

“In 2010, the Oakland Police Department announced it would stop responding to 44 crimes, including grand theft, burglary, car wrecks, identity theft, extortion and vandalism. The service cutbacks were blamed on the layoff of 80 officers, which city officials said were no longer affordable.  With police failing to respond to crimes and crime rates rising, the number of Oakland neighborhoods relying on private security has skyrocketed. Bay Alarm, the largest security company in Oakland, has nearly doubled its business in the past year. It services many neighborhoods in Oakland, including Montclair, Redwood Heights and Rockridge.”

Neiman Marcus Credit Cards Hacked

“Luxury retailer Neiman Marcus confirmed Saturday that customer’s credit and debit card information may have been compromised, following evidence of hacking in mid-December.  The company did not reveal how many customers had been or would be affected, but said it was in the process of notifying card holders whose accounts may have unauthorized charges, the Associated Press reports.  Target announced in December that it was the victim of a cybersecurity attack over the holiday season, and recently raised its estimates on the number of affected customers from 40 million to 70 million. It is unclear if the two security breaches are related.”

GoldMoney Group adds Bitcoin to commodity vault

“One of the UK’s leading precious metals storage firms is adding an altogether more unusual commodity to its vaults – Bitcoin.  GoldMoney Group, which holds $1.4 billion worth of precious metals for customers, is setting up a new business specialising in ‘cold’ storage of Bitcoin, an increasingly popular digital currency. Netagio will encrypt Bitcoins and store them on offline storage devices in secure vaults.  Netagio, which soft launched at the beginning of December, already has several customers signed up and Hamblin predicts good demand for the service.  The new venture joins London-based Elliptic, a Lloyds of London-backed Bitcoin storage specialist which launched last week.”

Target Increases Number of People Hit in Data Breach To 70 Million

“The data breach that hit Target Corp. over the holidays was bigger than the company had previously said, affecting more systems and compromising a new set of personal information for 70 million people.  Target said Friday that the new set of stolen information included some mix of names, mailing addresses, phone numbers and email addresses. The information was stored separately from the 40 million credit and debit card accounts that the discount chain had previously said were affected, indicating that a different system had been hacked.  The new disclosure came just as Target said it was starting to see a recovery from the damage done to sales by the original news of the breach.”

Bitcoin vault offering insurance is ‘world’s first’

“A Bitcoin storage service that insures deposits of the digital currency against loss and theft has launched in London.  Elliptic Vault uses ‘deep cold storage’, where private encrypted keys to bitcoins are stored on offline servers and in a secure location.  The facility’s founders say they are the ‘first in the world’ to offer insurance for Bitcoin owners. The company is underwritten by Lloyd’s of London, which will give people ‘more faith in the Bitcoin system’, according to Emily Spaven, managing editor of CoinDesk, a digital currency news site.  Insurance payouts will be calculated using the Bitcoin to US dollar exchange rate at the time a claim is made.”
