Yahoo malware turned European computers into bitcoin slaves

“As many as two million European users of Yahoo may have received PC malware from virus-laden ads served by its homepage over a four-day period last week.  Some of the malware would turn PCs into bitcoin miners – a huge drain on its computing resources – without users’ knowledge. Yahoo has been criticised for not saying how many people could be affected or doing anything to help those with the malware, which attacked flaws in Java modules on systems.  Fox IT, the Dutch cybersecurity firm which first disclosed the vulnerability to the public, estimated that there were around 27,000 infections every hour the malware was live on the site.”

Teen Reported to Police After Finding Security Hole in Govt Website

“Joshua Rogers, a 16-year-old in the state of Victoria, found a basic security hole that allowed him to access a database containing sensitive information for about 600,000 public transport users who made purchases through the Metlink web site run by the Transport Department.  Rogers says he contacted the site after Christmas to report the vulnerability but never got a response. After waiting two weeks, he contacted the newspaper to report the problem. When The Age called the Transportation Department for comment, it reported Rogers to the police.”

“Slack had made his offense far worse by installing the device on a computer belonging to the West Virginia Supreme Court. Slack’s wife worked for the Clay County Magistrate Court and often had occasion to enter the financial details of defendants convicted in court—including the credit cards they used to pay their fines. Slack’s bid to spy on his wife’s e-mails was also vacuuming up private court information, which the government was bound to take extremely seriously if it found out.  Making the whole situation just that much worse was the fact that Slack was a cop. Not just any cop, either; Slack was the county sheriff.”

Bullion worth $200,000 stolen from home by thieves using wheelie bin

“Police say thieves have used a wheelie bin to steal $200,000 worth of gold and silver bullion from the home of a war veteran on Brisbane’s north side.  Thieves entered the home in Ellie Court in Upper Kedron sometime between 6:00pm on New Year’s Eve and 3:00am on New Year’s Day.  They broke into a safe which contained 80 kilograms of gold and silver bullion and coins and loaded the bullion into a wheelie bin to ferry it to their getaway car.  The bullion’s owner, Corporal Christopher Lunt, had saved up the gold and silver from wages paid while he was deployed overseas.  Cpl Lunt says he was out of the house celebrating the new year when the robbery occurred.”
