89% of Venetians vote to secede from Italy, form independent state

“Inspired by Scotland’s separatist ambitions, 89% of the residents of the lagoon city and its surrounding area, opted to break away from Italy in an unofficial ballot.  The proposed ‘Repubblica Veneta’ would include the five million inhabitants of the Veneto region and could later expand to include parts of Lombardy, Trentino and Friuli-Venezia Giulia.  The 1000 year–old democratic Serenissima Repubblica di Venezia was quashed by Napoleon and was subsumed into Italy in 1866.  Wealthy Venetians, under mounting financial pressure in the economic crisis, have rallied in their thousands, after growing tired of supporting Italy’s poor and crime ridden Mezzogiorno south, through high taxation.”

Will Marijuana Legalization Lead to a Larger Judicial Rethinking?

the-daily-bell-top-logo61

“From the standpoint of ‘justice,’ the eventual reversal of tens of thousands of marijuana cases in the US can be seen as bolstering civil society. But it also raises serious questions and will have serious ramifications.  Chief among these ramifications will be additional questioning about why marijuana was banned in the first place, and why people received prison sentences that blighted their lives – and the lives of their families.  There was no Internet at the time to provoke a sustained debate about Prohibition – nor to examine the political realities behind the 1920s ban.  Over time this examination will likely provoke a more intensive argument over the West’s state-oriented judicial system.”

Catalonia getting ready to divorce Spain

“The referendum in Crimea is the first plebiscite in Europe dedicated to the issue of independence scheduled to take place this year. After Crimea, Scotland and Catalonia are planning to declare their right to self-determination. Enrique Ravello, a member of the Spanish parliament, even took part in the Crimean referendum as an observer. Back in January 2013 the parliament of Catalonia adopted the Declaration of sovereignty of that autonomous region, which allowed its citizens to independently determine its political future.”

Scotland’s Independence: A Glimpse of America’s Future

“In September, Scots take to the polls to decide whether to end the Act of the Union of 1707 and leave the United Kingdom. Not much news on this possible secession makes it’s way to our shores, but we are watching it closely. The Scots push for freedom is fueled by feelings that being part of something bigger isn’t better.   It’s the age-old value for money proposition.  Nearly 40% are in favor with 14% being undecided. Those unsure voters will be the ones who decide if Scotland is better off alone. Scotland’s quest for independence, if successful, will be a blueprint for other European regions — or U.S. states — to do the same.”

Arrested Bitcoin Mogul Charlie Shrem Defiant In First Public Appearance

“In his speech, he compared Bitcoin to the printing press, arguing that just as governments and the Church opposed the democratizing effects of the first widely available books, financial and banking incumbents see the potential for Bitcoin to disassemble their control of the economy.  ‘This is something completely new in the history of human communication and Bitcoin is one of the largest socio-economic experiments human kind has ever seen,’ Shrem said.  Shrem’s rhetoric represents a marked change from his earlier approach to Bitcoin’s relationship with the government. He had been a vocal member of the Bitcoin Foundation, which took a lobbying approach.”

Vida Cannabis: Positioned for Powerful Profit Potential

“The trend toward legalization isn’t a blue-sky dream. It is happening NOW. Governments all over the world have thrown in the towel on resisting the trend and now are focused on grabbing the tax revenue it can deliver. Vast fortunes were amassed by the Kennedy and Bronfman families, among others, from the demise of U.S. Prohibition in 1933. And that was a single-country event. Even greater fortunes will be built on the relaxing of the worldwide prohibition of cannabis. We picked our horse in the race – Vida Cannabis Corp. – because in many important ways it is already in the lead.”

US Towns Declaring Bankruptcy Are The Lucky Ones

“Bankruptcy is attractive to taxpayers because it offers a partial exit strategy by reducing public sector pensions and other benefits. But public sector unions have a death grip on the power politics of many, if not most, American cities.  What happened in Scranton should be a cautionary tale. Similar battles are erupting across the continent – from Stockton, California in the West to Heartland cities like Pittsburgh and to Trenton, New Jersey in the East. The reason is the same. The enormous unfunded liability of public sector wages and benefits makes taxes and fees soar even as government ‘services’, like garbage collection and street lights, decline.”

“I Will Never Go Back”: why the Ukrainians did what they did

“Our hosts for the evening were an oncologist and his wife, a music teacher, and we were guests in their home—a small two-bedroom apartment where they lived with their son. The oncologist’s hospital, which we had toured earlier that day, was a converted horse barn; his office was a former stall. His colleague and other dinner guest was a cardiologist who had spent a few months in the 1980s in the United States on a medical exchange program—by chance at the same hospital where Sandra had been born 40 years earlier. Both were in their early 50s and had grown up in the Soviet system. To protect them now I will call them ‘Sergei’ and ‘Vlad,’ respectively.”
