89% of Venetians vote to secede from Italy, form independent state

“Inspired by Scotland’s separatist ambitions, 89% of the residents of the lagoon city and its surrounding area, opted to break away from Italy in an unofficial ballot.  The proposed ‘Repubblica Veneta’ would include the five million inhabitants of the Veneto region and could later expand to include parts of Lombardy, Trentino and Friuli-Venezia Giulia.  The 1000 year–old democratic Serenissima Repubblica di Venezia was quashed by Napoleon and was subsumed into Italy in 1866.  Wealthy Venetians, under mounting financial pressure in the economic crisis, have rallied in their thousands, after growing tired of supporting Italy’s poor and crime ridden Mezzogiorno south, through high taxation.”

Will Marijuana Legalization Lead to a Larger Judicial Rethinking?

But it also raises serious questions and will have serious ramifications.  Chief among these ramifications will be additional questioning about why marijuana was banned in the first place, and why people received prison sentences that blighted their lives – and the lives of their families.  There was no Internet at the time to provoke a sustained debate about Prohibition – nor to examine the political realities behind the 1920s ban.  Over time this examination will likely provoke a more intensive argument over the West’s state-oriented judicial system.”

After Crimea, Scotland and Catalonia are planning to declare their right to self-determination. Enrique Ravello, a member of the Spanish parliament, even took part in the Crimean referendum as an observer. Back in January 2013 the parliament of Catalonia adopted the Declaration of sovereignty of that autonomous region, which allowed its citizens to independently determine its political future.”

Scotland’s Independence: A Glimpse of America’s Future

Not much news on this possible secession makes it’s way to our shores, but we are watching it closely. The Scots push for freedom is fueled by feelings that being part of something bigger isn’t better.   It’s the age-old value for money proposition.  Nearly 40% are in favor with 14% being undecided. Those unsure voters will be the ones who decide if Scotland is better off alone. Scotland’s quest for independence, if successful, will be a blueprint for other European regions — or U.S. states — to do the same.”
