‘Six Californias’ plan doable, could be on November ballot

Tim Draper, the multimillionaire Silicon Valley venture capitalist behind the proposal, said he was encouraged by the California legislative analyst’s report, declaring that dividing the nation’s largest state is ‘clearly legal and doable.’  ‘It is obvious that we need a breath of fresh air in California government, and creating six new states allows the refresh we need,’ Mr. Draper said in an email after the study was made public over the weekend. The report notes that congressional approval would be required even if California voters support the amendment. Organizers are working to gather the 1 million signatures needed to place the measure on the November ballot.”

Davos global survey finds growing distrust in government

“Ahead of the gathering of political and business leaders in the Swiss resort of Davos, the public relations firm Edelman found that only 44 percent of university-educated people participating in the survey trusted government, down 4 percentage points from the previous year. As recently as 2011, trust in politicians stood at 52 percent.  The 2014 Edelman Trust Barometer found the largest-ever gap in its 14-year history — 14 points — between trust in government and trust in business.  Agency CEO Richard Edelman  warned that sinking trust in government could stoke a rise in support for more extreme political parties, particularly in May’s election for the European Parliament.”

Jury Nullifies Charge Against Pot Grower Who Shot and Killed a Cop

“This week a Texas grand jury declined to indict a marijuana grower for shooting and killing a sheriff’s deputy who burst into his home in the early morning to execute a search warrant. Henry Goedrich Magee, who was indicted on drug and weapon charges (the latter only because he was growing marijuana), said he believed Burleson County Sgt. Adam Sowders was a burglar. ‘This was a terrible tragedy that a deputy sheriff was killed, but Hank Magee believed that he and his pregnant girlfriend were being robbed,’ Magee’s lawyer, Dick DeGuerin, told A.P. ‘He did what a lot of people would have done. He defended himself and his girlfriend and his home.'”

Powers-That-Be Secretly Terrified Of People, Pretend They’re In Control

“Part of the reason that our actions are more powerful than we think is that courage is contagious. So is the ability to think.  And a recent study shows that when only 10% of a population have strongly-held beliefs, their belief will often be adopted by the majority of the society.  True, governments worldwide are cracking down on liberty with the iron fist of repression.  But some argue that this is actually a sign that we are winning.  Indeed, the use of heavy-handed tactics – taking the velvet glove off of the iron fist – could backfire, as it will show the ’emperor’s ruthlessness’ for all to see.”

UN Claims Uruguay Not Allowed to End Marijuana Prohibition

“With the recent decision to end decades of pot prohibition in Uruguay making it the first entire nation to take the step, analysts widely anticipate similar efforts around the world to accelerate. Voters in Colorado and Washington state have completely nullified the federal and international marijuana regimes.  Across Latin America and Europe, meanwhile, drug policy has been hotly debated, with at least two nations so far — Portugal and the Czech Republic — decriminalizing all drugs.  In response to the trends, UN narcotics bureaucrats, whose generous tax-funded salaries depend on the perpetuation of the war on various plants and substances, have responded with outrage and concern.”

An Armed People in Mexico and Their Threat to the State

“The self-defense groups have been organizing themselves–and have seized towns throughout Mexico in over 11 states–to fight against cartels like the Knights Templar in Michoacan under the umbrella of the Consejo de Autodefensas Unidas de Michoacan (Council ofUnited Self-Defense Groups of Michoacan). The Mexican government just sent their military to disarm them in Parácuaro , according to reports shooting 7-12 and killing 4 people, including an 11 year old girl, only to later return their weapons due to public pressure. People from Parácuaro came out to the main road to confront the military with sticks and stones, which forced them to return the weapons.”

Liberal icon urges Obama impeachment

“Worse than Richard Nixon. An unprecedented abuse of powers. The most un-American president in the nation’s history.  Nat Hentoff does not think much of President Obama.  And now, the famous journalist says it is time to begin looking into impeachment.  Hentoff sees the biggest problem as Obama’s penchant to rule by executive order when he can’t convince Congress to do things his way.  The First Amendment expert still hews left on many issues, railing against former President George W. Bush, former Vice President Dick Cheney, the prison at Guantanamo Bay and the National Defense Authorization Act.”

This is what armed revolution looks like

“It’s almost exactly like that scene from V for Vendetta.  You know– the part in the end where swarms of people go up against the police with their sticks and Guy Fawkes masks…  That’s what’s happening in Ukraine right now. And with reason.  After weeks of student protests over the government’s failure to sign a European integration and association treaty, the police violently cracked down on protestors, and politicians passed a series of new laws in the middle of the night.”

Escape From Political Control

“Frustrated with their political prospects, many libertarians are coming to the conclusion that instead of trying to change government, a better strategy might be to simply sidestep it entirely. Even self-described Democrats and Obama supporters, like startup founder and venture capitalist Balaji Srinivasan, seem to be concluding that in order to get space to experiment and innovate in today’s political climate, an ‘exit’ might be in order.  Srinivasan expanded on his vision in a couple of essays in which he proposed what he calls ‘inverse Amish’ spaces. Quite opposite to the Amish the point would be to push the envelope of what’s allowed.”
