‘Where is the evidence my son was a terrorist?’

“The parents of a British-born man killed by a US drone strike after being stripped of his UK citizenship have spoken out for the first time – to say they will never forgive the British Government for his death.  Mohamed Sakr was born and brought up in London before he was targeted and killed in February 2012 in Somalia.  Now his Egyptian-born parents Gamal and Eman Sakr, who have lived in Britain for 35 years, have accused ministers of betraying this country’s democratic values.  The couple said they believe their son was left vulnerable to the attack after the Government stripped him of his British citizenship months before he was killed.”

Drones killing innocent Pakistanis, U.N. official says

“The study concludes that the strikes have killed far more people than the United States has acknowledged, and traumatized many more innocent people.  That trauma is destroying a way of life, Emmerson said. ‘The Pashtun tribes of the … area have suffered enormously under the drone campaign.’  And tribal law prescribes revenge for the killing of a tribe member, which serves to radicalize more young men against the United States, he said.  Pakistan considers the strikes counterproductive, illegal and a violation of its sovereignty.”

Federal Judge Finds National Security Letters Unconstitutional, Bans Them

“Ultra-secret national security letters that come with a gag order on the recipient are an unconstitutional impingement on free speech, a federal judge in California ruled in a decision released Friday.  U.S. District Judge Susan Illston ordered the government to stop issuing so-called NSLs across the board, in a stunning defeat for the Obama administration’s surveillance practices. She also ordered the government to cease enforcing the gag provision in any other cases. However, she stayed her order for 90 days to give the government a chance to appeal to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.”

Drones 101

“Reapers feature a maximum payload of 3,000 pounds, or 1.5 tons. That means they can carry a combination of Hellfires and larger 500 pound bombs like the GBU-12 Paveway II and GBD-38 JDAM. Those have an ‘effective casualty radius’ of about 200 feet. That means that about 50 percent of people within 200 feet of the blast site will die. Those odds improve — or worsen, depending on how you look at it — the closer you get, obviously.
So imagine if you took a football field and shrunk it by a third. A Reaper attacks one endzone with a GBU-12. If you’re on the field, you have a 50 percent chance of dying.”

How Can the U.S. be at War with Al-Qaeda and Support It?

thelrcblog-50016

“How can the U.S. be at war with al-Qaeda and be providing material support to it in overthrowing governments in Libya and Syria? It cannot. How can the U.S. be at war with al-Qaeda and maintain Saudi Arabia as a close ally, when that country is a major source of al-Qaeda people and teaching?  The idea put forward by two administrations that the U.S. is at war with al-Qaeda is a ‘Big Lie’ that is designed to provide cover for other motives for their military actions. It is a very simple and convenient cover story that sells to the public as a rationale for all sorts of U.S. military activities in many countries, all of which have other explanations.”

Ron Paul: Congress, Drones and The Imperial Presidency

Ron-Paul1

“The administration’s outrageous response to the most serious Constitutional question of all − when a government can kill its own citizens − is clear evidence of an executive branch out of control.  Many of the drafters of the Constitution envisioned the presidency as an office with very limited powers, but even the most dedicated proponents of a strong presidency at the time would be shocked to see the concentration of power in the modern presidency.  Today the presidency is viewed as the center of the federal government, with each successive administration expanding the power of the executive at the expense of Congress and the people.”

LA Times: Only An Incipient “Terrorist” Denounces State Murder

“Citing the most recent missive from the self-appointed Stasi at the Southern Poverty Law Center, the Los Angeles Times claims that there are 1,360 proto-terrorist groups — sneeringly denounced as ‘patriots,’ ‘constitutionalists,’ and ‘sovereign citizens’ — scattered throughout the Soyuz. ‘These groups should be closely monitored, with resources adequate to the task, even if it means shifting some homeland security money from the hunt for foreign terrorists,’ concludes the paper.”

Pentagon to review controversial drone warfare medal

“The US military said Tuesday it halted production of a new medal for drone and cyber warfare, ordering a review after critics called the award an insult to combat veterans.
Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel, who received two Purple Hearts and other decorations as a soldier in the Vietnam War, made the decision to put a hold on the new Distinguished Warfare Medal after hearing complaints from veterans, his spokesman George Little told a news conference.  Hagel asked the military’s top officer, General Martin Dempsey, to lead the review of the medal and to look at the ranking of the award compared to other military medals, he said.”

Is It Seditious to Oppose Drone-Killing? If So, Count me as a Seditionist

“While Senator Rand Paul’s drone filibuster will not restrain the Obama administration’s use of drones to carry out targeted killings of alleged terrorists and militants, it has laid bare an interesting alignment on the political landscape.  Some nominally liberal commentators, such as Newsweek’s Eleanor Clift, accused Senator Paul and other opponents of the drone program of inciting sedition.  America was founded on principled hostility to power, not unqualified submission to it. The Founders most likely wouldn’t recognize as Americans people who would entrust the president with the power of discretionary killing.”

Balkanization of Syrian War

Balkanization of Syrian War

“Today the UK Telegraph is reporting that the United States has facilitated the shipment of some 3,000 tons of weapons left over from the Balkan wars of the 1990s to Syria via Croatia.  This radical escalation on the part of the US and UK is in clear violation of the European arms embargo of Syria and similar US administration pledges.  And where are these weapons ending up?  The US is facilitating the transfer of sophisticated weapons to terrorists who utilize al-Qaeda in Iraq style techniques such as planting roadside bombs.  Here are Syria’s jihadist fighters showing off their latest gifts courtesy of the United States.”
