Aeroflot sees obstacles to low-cost Russian air travel lifted soon

“Laws preventing airlines from charging for food and baggage – the last obstacles standing in the way of significantly cheaper airfares in Russia – will be lifted soon, the country’s largest carrier Aeroflot predicted on Sunday.  The Russian government has already revoked laws prohibiting the sale of non-refundable tickets and employment of foreign pilots since the state-carrier announced plans to launch low-cost airline Dobrolet last year, chief executive Vitaly Saveliev said.  But allowing Russia’s new budget airline to charge for food and baggage would result in ticket prices up to 40 percent cheaper than Aeroflot’s traditional economy class service.”

Shock: Colombia to Legalize Marijuana

the-daily-bell-top-logo61

“Colombia has a great climate for marijuana. The plant is indigenous and once it is cultivated and harvested, Colombia is in a good position via its free-trade agreements to supply top quality, naturally produced, low-cost cannabis around the world. From an investment standpoint, those seeking to participate in this powerful trend should be asking, ‘How does a company ideally position itself to capture significant market share in this timely and highly-profitable industry – and establish a sustainable leadership position?’ The answer will no doubt emerge as more countries with more natural advantages emerge to offer quality products to a growing market place.”

Rand Paul: Blame Dick Cheney for Iraq violence, not Obama

“Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky. said many critics who blame the president for the ferocious Islamist insurgency in Iraq, like former Vice President Dick Cheney, should take a look in the mirror.  ‘I don’t blame President Obama,’ Paul told NBC News. ‘Has he really got the solution? Maybe there is no solution.’  Paul said those who have questioned the president’s approach should ask the same questions of those who supported the 2003 invasion of Iraq: ‘Were they right in their predictions? Were there weapons of mass destruction there? Was the war won in 2005, when many of those people said it was won?’  ‘They didn’t, really, I think understand the civil war that would break out,’ Paul said.”

UN Calls for Decriminalization of All Drugs

Anthony-Wile1

“The UN has now called for the decriminalization not just of marijuana but of other drugs as well, including so-called injectables. Our analyses are often correct, but in this case, we’re a little surprised at how fast confirmation has arrived.  Drugs will be legalized – at least in part – to allow the UN to create a more formalized regulatory regime around the world.  An editorial such as this would not be complete without noting the pitiless manipulation of laws and regulations for which elites are responsible. Millions, perhaps billions of lives have been negatively affected and even ruined by the merciless imposition of the so-called ‘war on drugs.'”

The Feds Step Up Utility Growth

“Federal regulators’ recent move to change the criteria used to calculate regulated utilities’ allowed returns may be a small victory for income investors.  Over the past few years, regulators pared utility profits in response to ultra-low Treasury rates. But investors and energy executives have long argued that these historically low rates are a market distortion created by Federal Reserve stimulus and, therefore, do not accurately reflect utilities’ actual operating environment.  The order in late June by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), the agency that regulates the transmission and wholesale sale of electricity in interstate commerce, finally acknowledged this reality.”

Denver unemployment sharply lower after marijuana legalization

“Metro Denver’s unadjusted unemployment rate stood at 5.4 percent in April, sharply lower than a year earlier, according to raw county jobs estimates Friday from the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment.  Unemployment in metro Denver was 6.5 percent in April 2013 and 6.4 percent in March of this year, according to the CDLE numbers.  The 5.4 percent unadjusted jobless rate is for a 10-county area that includes Denver, Aurora, Lakewood, Broomfield and Centennial, but not Boulder County.  Boulder County’s unemployment rate was 4.2 percent last month. The rate for metro Denver combined with Boulder was 5.3 percent.”

Dozens of Irish councils to make property tax cuts, freeze rates

“Homeowners in more than a dozen city and county council areas are in line for a property tax rate cut next year.  A briefing note, prepared for the Economic Management Council (EMC), says between 12 and 14 councils will have sufficient funds to cut their rate.  However, any reduction in property tax rates would be subject to the Government not landing local authorities with extra costs or cutting their central funding.  Separately, a freeze on the valuation of houses for the property tax for the next five years is also being discussed within the Coalition.  The discussions will come as a welcome boost to families who have been hit with a series of stealth taxes over the past seven years.”

Irish government promises income tax cuts in next budget

“Enda Kenny has promised tax cuts in the next budget to help struggling families.  The Taoiseach vowed to cut the top rate of income tax for low and middle income earners admitting that the country has ‘been through the wars’.  Mr Kenny said: ‘We will reduce the 52 percent tax rate for low and middle income workers, starting with this budget in October.’  He added:  ‘Ireland has been through the wars. There isn’t a family in any part that hasn’t been affected.  ‘But my message is that we’re in recovery, things are getting better and we intend now to make sure they get better for everyone.'”

The Evolution of the Marijuana Marketplace

Anthony-Wile1

“For the better part of 30 years, due to the war on drugs suppoted by prohibition, marijuana production was driven indoors, away from peering eyes. The advances that were made in technologically-driven growing have been impressive to say the least.  This is, in fact, one of the reasons that drug company resistance to marijuana [legalization] is likely to fail.  It would seem that those seeking to support this particular prohibition are probably not aware of the political and economic forces lined up against them.  A political consensus will drive drug legalization forward; technological innovations will boost productivity and the bottom line. This is a powerful combination.”

Khan Academy’s Challenge to State-Certified Educators

portallogo3

“The whole system of automatic payments based on seniority and the number of semester hours earned in night school programs and summer vacation programs is about to come to an end.  The teachers’ union is by far the most powerful single union in the United States. It is the most powerful politically. It is the most powerful economically. It is based on an illusion. That illusion is being statistically undermined every day by the Khan Academy. The foundation of the entire public school system all over the world is being undermined free of charge every day. A man with no training as a teacher is clearly the best teacher in the world. This is demonstrated by the number of students he has.”
