In sudden announcement, US to give up control of DNS root zone

“In a historic decision on Friday, the United States has decided to give up control of the authoritative root zone file, which contains all names and addresses of all top-level domain names.  The new change is in advance of the upcoming ICANN meeting to be held in Brazil in April 2014. Brazil and other nations have fumed at revelations of American spying on its political leaders and corporations, which were first revealed in September 2013 as the result of documents distributed by whistleblower Edward Snowden.  ICANN President and CEO Fadi Chehadé lauded the decision as ‘historic’ and said that ICANN will be moving toward multi-stakeholder control.”

Google is encrypting search globally, against NSA and China’s censors.

“Google has begun routinely encrypting Web searches conducted in China, posing a bold new challenge to that nation’s powerful system for censoring the Internet and tracking what individual users are viewing online.  The company says the move is part of a global expansion of privacy technology designed to thwart surveillance by government intelligence agencies, police and hackers who, with widely available tools, can view e-mails, search queries and video chats when that content is unprotected.  The development is the latest consequence of Edward Snowden’s release last year of NSA documents detailing the extent of government surveillance of the Internet.”

Britain preparing to end plans to tax Bitcoin trading

“HM Revenue & Customs said in a meeting with UK traders that it would no longer levy 20 percent value-added tax (VAT) on bitcoin transactions and also said it would not tax margins either, according to the paper.  The British support for the currency comes days after Mt. Gox, once the world’s largest bitcoin exchange, was sued by a customer in the United States seeking to recover money lost in the hacking attack.  Corporation tax and other taxes would still apply, according to the FT.”

DEA Agent Joins Marijuana Industry

“While Washington State is still adjusting to many changes since legalizing recreational marijuana—from growing space size to the number of licenses to give out—one of the biggest changes may be Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) employees going to work in the private sector. Reason TV sat down with Patrick Moen, a former supervisory special agent with the DEA, who now works as compliance director and senior counsel at Privateer Holdings, a private equity firm that invests in cannabis.”

Mark Thornton on Prohibition, Marijuana and Loss of Elite Control

“Marijuana legalization is only a small part of the changes being made, but it is surely a crack in the seamless surface of economic and sociopolitical control that internationalists forged in the 20th century. It is not control that elites yield easily or graciously, but we wonder if those behind this startling legalization will lose control of the process as they seem to be losing control in so many other areas. Whether it is global warming, the war on terror, the covert wars in the Middle East and now the Ukraine, the control exercised by the globalist conspiracy seems to be slipping. To a great degree it depended on secrecy and that secrecy has been ripped away in this past decade.”

Bitcoin Declared ‘Lawful Money’ in California Assembly

“The California State Assembly has unanimously passed measure AB 129 declaring Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies as ‘lawful money.’  To be clear, ‘lawful money’ is different from ‘legal tender.’ ‘Lawful money’ describes any currency that is legal to use in exchange for goods and services, but is not required to be accepted for debts, taxes, or any other dues.  Before the passing of measure AB 129, Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies were not deemed ‘lawful money.’ In the state of California, it is against the law to issue or circulate any currency that is not ‘lawful money,’ and doing so can result in fines up to $15,000 or 15 years imprisonment.”

Cyprus Central Bank says Bitcoin is not illegal

“The Central Bank directly acknowledged for the first time yesterday that bitcoin is not illegal, but again highlighted the risks of using an unregulated digital currency.  ‘Bitcoin is not illegal, but at the same time neither is it subject to control or regulation,’ sources at the Central Bank told the Cyprus Mail.  The Central Bank warnings came just as bitcoin marketers Neo & Bee were poised to launch their business here. Following a weeks-long media blitz, Neo & Bee opened its flagship branch in Nicosia on Monday. The company has already partnered with a number of businesses accepting payment in bitcoin, including So Easy Stores, LTV and Telemarketing.”

Bank of Thailand: Bitcoin exchanges can resume operations

“It’s been months since Thailand’s largest Bitcoin exchange was forced to stop trading after the Bank of Thailand ruled that Bitcoin is ‘not a currency’. However, as of February 15, Thailand’s Bitcoin.co.th is ready to operate all types of Bitcoin transactions once again.  From the Bank of Thailand’s letter (PDF in Thai), the current situation is that Bitcoin can be traded in Thailand so long as it’s only converted to/from Thai baht. So Bitcoin cannot be used as a way of converting foreign currencies in the nation. The country’s top bank says it has no plans to expand the laws to regulate Bitcoin.”

Out of the ‘Shadows’: Pot Sellers Can Now Do Business With Banks

“The Obama administration issued new rules Friday intended to ease the concerns of banks wanting to deal with businesses that legally sell marijuana.  While 20 states and the District of Columbia have passed laws allowing the sale of medical and recreational marijuana, its production, sale, and possession remain illegal under federal law. And because the federal government regulates banking transactions, marijuana dealers have been unable to get banks to do business with them.  As a result, dealers operate strictly with cash, creating a tempting target for thieves. Treasury officials say the revised rules should reduce the dangers associated with conducting an all-cash business.”

Exonerations On The Rise, And Not Just Because Of DNA

“At least 87 people were set free for crimes they did not commit last year, the highest number since researchers began keeping track more than 20 years ago. Some of those people spent decades in prison before release.  And it’s no longer just DNA evidence that’s driving exonerations, the registry’s report finds. It’s because police and prosecutors have been more willing to investigate themselves.  Only one-fifth of the exonerations last year relied on newly tested DNA. More than 30 percent occurred because law enforcement agencies reopened a long-closed case or handed over their records to someone else who wanted to take a look.”
