How New Zealand banned software patents without violating international law

“What do you do when you’re a small country with a technology industry convinced that innovation requires the banning of software patents, but you’ve signed an international treaty that in theory obliges you to make software patentable? If you’re New Zealand, you simply declare that software isn’t an invention in the first place.  In 1998, the head of the UK Patent Office commented that European law says that a piece of pure software is not technically an invention. In New Zealand, a poll of the members of the Institute of IT Professionals revealed that 94% were in favor of banning software patents. In India, courts have upheld that country’s ban on software patents.”

Glenn Beck Calls For Nationwide Anti-War Rallies

Glenn Beck Calls For Nationwide Anti-War Rallies

“Beck said he’s not an anti-war protestor, but declared that ‘we need anti-war rallies’ to push back against this, and people need to just ignore politicians like John McCain and President Obama dismissing opposition to intervention as coming from ‘extremists.’ Beck reminded the audience Obama’s anti-war stance was one of the major things that secured his election, and pointed out that he was highly critical of Bush for similar tactics. He instructed listeners to find common ground with liberals on this issue and stand united against intervention. He concluded, ‘Don’t screw around with this. This is WWIII in the making.'”

Indiana: Court Overturns Stop For Hole In Tail Light

“A small hole in a tail light does not justify a traffic stop, the Indiana Court of Appeals ruled last week. A three-judge panel said the evidence against Brad Kroft should have been suppressed because police should not have stopped his Jeep Commander on April 22, 2012.  At around 1:30am, Kroft had been driving with his wife Heidi on 96th Street near Hague Road in Indianapolis. There was a crack in his passenger-side tail light that created a dime-size hole in the otherwise fully functional stop light. A passing police officer saw it and decided he could issue a ticket.”

Why Libertarianism Will Crush Conservatism

“They have over the last century lost their battles against Wilsonian progressivism, the New Deal, the Great Society, racial integration, abortion, drug abuse, and secularization.  The fact that they have lost so reliably, despite their persistent numerical superiority, is a testament to the holes in their philosophy. Along the way, they’ve adopted virtually every bureaucratic idea pioneered by progressives, increasing government spending while wasting energy and billions of dollars fighting losing cultural battles. The diminishing appeal of conservatism for younger, more cosmopolitan millennials as well as exploding immigrant populations translates to serious demographic problems for Republicans.”

Dear World, Americans Don’t Want War With Syria

“Their propaganda doesn’t work on us anymore. They can’t hide behind political labels anymore. They can’t hide behind geopolitical unions and corporations anymore. They can’t hide behind religions or ‘humanitarian’ organizations anymore. By their actions we shall know them.  A Reuters poll released today said only 25% of Americans would support military intervention in Syria if, and only if, it was proven that Assad used chemical weapons.  There is virtually no support for this war.  If it happens, please know that it is not the will of the American people.  We stand with you – our human brothers and sisters – for peace, liberty, and justice against this global threat.”

How to End the Wars – It really is easy and it’s been done before

“The slaughter of millions of southeast Asians and a rising US military death toll was angering the people.  LBJ’s war was such a disaster that his re-election was in jeopardy.  As the situation grew progressively worse for LBJ, he feared the humiliation of a general election or primary defeat so he decided NOT to run for re-election in 1968.  Nixon, a foreign policy hawk,  won the 1968 election.  The Vietnam War resulted in over 58,000 dead Americans but the hawks were determined to wage the Vietnam War for all eternity.  However, Nixon was soon smothered with anti-war Congress Critters who ferociously fought to end the Vietnam War. By 1973, Congress simply refused to fund it.”

Southern California Cities Further Reject Red Light Cameras

Embattled red light camera vendor Redflex Traffic Systems has lost another contract. The Escondido, California city council voted unanimously Wednesday to allow the Australian company’s right to issue near $500 tickets expire on December 12, and ticketing will cease even sooner.  Councilmen were swayed by the $89,000 cost per intersection to run cameras compared to $2400 to coordinate signal timing and $5000 per year to add protected left-hand turns.  Escondido loses $177,000 a year on the program while Redflex and the county and state governments profit from it. That turned out to be too high a financial cost for other city officials who otherwise support photo ticketing.”

To Save the King of the Jungle, a Call to Pen Him In

“After 35 years of field research in the Serengeti plains, Craig Packer, director of the Lion Research Center at the University of Minnesota, has lost all patience with the romance of African wilderness. Fences, he says, are the only way to stop the precipitous and continuing decline in the number of African lions.  ‘Reality has to intrude,’ he said. ‘Do you want to know the two most hated species in Africa, by a mile? Elephants and lions.’ They destroy crops and livestock, he said, and sometimes, in the case of lions, actually eat people.  Dr. Packer’s goal is to save lions. Fencing them in, away from people and livestock, is the best way to do that, he believes, both for conservation and economics.”

Scientists: Legalize horn sales to save endangered rhinoceroses

“Attempts to discourage the use of rhino horn have failed, the scientists said, and, without a legal avenue to obtain the ingredient, the black market has stepped in. ‘Rhino horn is now worth more than gold,’ the scientists noted, saying that a kilogram that cost $4,700 in 1993 would fetch around $65,000 in 2012. Poachers, enticed by the high price tag, have swarmed, and ‘poaching in South Africa has, on average, more than doubled each year over the past 5 years.’  They liken their proposal to the legal trade in farmed crocodile skins, which has saved the endangered reptiles from over-hunting. A similar proposal for the rhinoceros was rejected 20 years ago.”

In-person Bitcoin exchanges make a splash in Berlin

“Supporters of Bitcoin spent Saturday engaging in personal exchanges in Berlin, taking place in a mobile art space which supports the cryptocurrency. Its official recognition by the German state earlier this month is only aiding its expansion.  Bitcoin Exchange Berlin hosted their third meeting on Saturday at the city’s Platoon Kunsthalle (Platoon Art Hall) to launch a European hub where people can both buy and sell a selection of products using Bitcoin and buy and sell the currency itself in a stock-exchange type climate. Buyers attend with notebooks or electronic devices in order to create an account with the currency and buy it.”
