Ohio University Considers Mandatory Re-Education Classes For Smokers

“Officials at Ohio University are considering mandatory classes for students who get caught smoking on campus as part of a draconian ban on smoking for the upcoming 2015-2016 academic year.  The ban will outlaw every use of cigarettes and e-cigarettes on any part of the 1,850-acre public university campus, reports The Athens News, the local newspaper.  Smokers won’t be able to take refuge in any designated smoking areas, either. The ban is utter and total.  Smoking bans are all the rage at colleges and universities across the country. This year, The College Fix notes, Ohio State, San Diego State and every public college in Georgia have instituted such bans.”

The Logical Conclusion of the Modern, Monetary Argument

the-daily-bell-top-logo61

“One of the most terrible things about the globalization of finance, money and industry is that it homogenizes booms and busts. There is literally nowhere to go. As economic centralization continues, these cycles will only worsen. These days in the West – and certainly in Washington – Republicans are sure they can mandate a technocratic interest-rate rule that will restrain the Fed from doing inordinate damage to the economy. Ironically, Democrats argue for more flexibility and less government interference regarding money. This would be admirable from a free-market standpoint except that they are arguing on behalf of a MONOPOLY facility. As usual, both parties get it wrong.”

FBI facial records could contain 52 million images by next year

“The documents provided to the EFF indicate that in 2012 the FBI possessed 13.6 million pictures, belonging to between 7 and 8 million people. One year later that number had jumped to 16 million images. By 2015, with help from an image processor that the FBI hopes will be able to sort through 55,000 photos each day, the NGI could have no less than 52 million images logged.  Americans not suspected of any criminal activity could easily be swept up into the NGI in any number of ways. An individual who goes through a fingerprint background check for an employment opportunity, for instance, could soon be required to submit a picture of himself along as well.”

UK police test ‘faster-than-ever’ facial recognition software

“Facial recognition surveillance software being tested by British cops that allows ‘faster than ever’ data searching and tracking of subjects is raising concerns among privacy activists.  NeoFace software analyses dozens of facial features from digital CCTV images or police body cameras and matching them with the 90,000 photos stored on Leicestershire Police’s database, which had become the first unit in the UK to test it.  Processing takes a matter of seconds.  ‘Besides the speed it’s also impressive because it can even find family members related to the person we’re trying to identify.’ Identity unit Manager Andy Ramsay adds.”

D.C. Mayor Proposes More Speed Cameras to Balance Budget

“More roadside speed cameras could be Washington D.C.’s future as Mayor Vincent Gray’s new budget calls for the city to collect an additional $50 million in speeding fines over the coming year. One council member called it ‘gotcha’ government.  Gray said his budget is balanced in part by that steep rise in speed camera fines from more speed cameras on different streets at different times. Motorists too often avoid permanent cameras, said the mayor’s budget director.  At-large Council member David Catania, an independent candidate for mayor, suggested the city ought to better warn motorists.  Despite that concern, city police are moving ahead, according to the mayor’s office.”

RoboPhotoCop: Coming to a Town Near You

“The new cameras can detect both speeding and red-light running. But that’s not all. They can also detect… ‘Blocking the Box:’ If you’re past the stop line or crosswalk when the light is red: Snap!  ‘Pedestrian Right of Way:  The crosswalk units use video analytics and radar to determine if a vehicle has stopped when someone is in the crosswalk.’ DC law requires that you stop if a person has one foot in a crosswalk. ‘Oversized Vehicles.’  And they’re also equipped with infrared scanners, mostly used to analyze the heat signature of cars on HOV restricted roads, to determine if they actually have two or more occupants, and license plate readers.”

This Company Saved Money By Tracking Employees With Fitbits

“One day soon, your company could hand you a fitness-tracking device as a gift.  The gift could have a sizeable payoff for the company. They could use it to track your fitness habits and, if you and your coworkers behave well, use that data to negotiate lower insurance premiums.  In fact, hot Valley startup Appirio did exactly that, handing out Fitbits to about 400 employees. And thanks to CloudFit, Appirio convinced its insurance company to lower its rates by 5%. That added up to a hefty  $280,000.  Thanks to provisions in the Affordable Care Act, which offers companies incentives for implementing wellness programs, and savings like that, more companies may try similar programs.”

Why Google’s Waze Is Trading User Data With Local Governments

“Planners in Rio de Janeiro are watching the aggregated data feeds of thousands of smartphones being walked or driven around a city, thanks to two popular travel apps, Waze and Moovit.  The goal is traffic management, and it involves swapping data for data. More cities are lining up to get access, and while the data the apps are sharing is all anonymous for now, identifying details could get more specific if cities like what they see, and people become more comfortable with being monitored through their smartphones in return for incentives.  The app can tell how fast a driver is moving and even get a complete record of their driving history.”

FATCA, GATCA and the Changing Investment Scene, Worldwide

the-daily-bell-top-logo61

“GATCA is going to destroy financial privacy, which was pretty much destroyed in the first place. So taking your savings offshore in the form of financial accounts is going to offer you no privacy benefits. If your plan depends on privacy, you should get a new plan. That said, there are other concrete reasons to diversify internationally. As I mentioned before, offshore banks are often much safer and better capitalized than most banks in the US. Additionally, a foreign bank account cannot be seized or frozen at the drop of a hat by the US government, which would be especially useful if official capital controls are put in place.”

NSA combining national ID cards, Internet intercepts, facial databases

“The NSA is harvesting millions of facial images from the Web for use in facial recognition algorithms through a program called ‘Identity Intelligence.’  The NSA is linking these facial images with other biometrics, identity data, and ‘behavioral’ data including ‘travel, financial, behaviors, social network.’  The NSA’s goal — in which it has been moderately successful — is to match images from disparate databases, including databases of intercepted videoconferences, images captured by airports of fliers, and hacked national identity card databases from other countries. According to the article, the NSA is trying to hack the national ID card databases of ‘Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Iran.'”
