Drug Dealers Unfazed By Legal Pot: “Nobody Wants To Be On A List”

“Sitting in a vegetarian café near his Denver apartment that has a bathroom covered in graffiti like ‘Urban Farming Is The Future!,’ Mario said he feared being on a medical registry while still in school.  ‘I’m afraid that information could get somehow compromised,’ he said about his fears of his loans being affected by being on a medical registry. ‘The last thing I’d want is to get my federal funding cut off.’  Owners have had to pay for an endless list of essentials, from applying for new licenses, packaging the many pounds of green stuff they grow, and instituting the state’s mandatory radio frequency identification system that tracks every single marijuana plant ‘from seed to sale.'”

Police get the tools they want; Britain loses the liberties it holds dear

“The far more worrying development is the unscrutinised rollout of the police automated numberplate recognition system (ANPR) for tracking vehicles, which currently stores 17bn images in its archive and is set to increase its capacity by 2018 to read and store 50-75 million separate vehicle sightings a day. Important to remember is that the decision to cover Britain’s motorways and town centres with cameras that track the movements of innocent citizens was never debated by parliament.  The system was cooked up between ‘twinned’ committees from the Home Office and the Association of Chief Police Officers, which, incidentally, was a private company and immune from FOI requests.”

Maybe the Most Orwellian Text Message a Government’s Ever Sent

“‘Dear subscriber, you are registered as a participant in a mass disturbance.’  That’s a text message that thousands of Ukrainian protesters spontaneously received on their cell phones today, as a new law prohibiting public demonstrations went into effect. It was the regime’s police force, sending protesters the perfectly dystopian text message to accompany the newly minted, perfectly dystopian legislation. The NY Times reports that the ‘Ukrainian government used telephone technology to pinpoint the locations of cell phones in use near clashes between riot police officers and protesters early on Tuesday.’ Near. Using a cell phone near a clash lands you on the regime’s hit list.”

Ford Exec: ‘We Know Everyone Who Breaks The Law’ Thanks To GPS

“Because of the GPS units installed in Ford vehicles, Ford knows when many of its drivers are speeding, and where they are while they’re doing it.  Farley has since retracted his statements.  Farley was trying to describe how much data Ford has on its customers, and illustrate the fact that the company uses very little of it in order to avoid raising privacy concerns.  Rather, he said, he imagined a day when the data might be used anonymously and in aggregate to help other marketers with traffic related problems.”

Yellen to Take the Green Path to Major Douglas’ Phony Social Credit

the-daily-bell-top-logo61

“Incoming Chair Yellen can take steps to de-link economic growth from increased carbon emissions in several ways. She can include carbon emissions as an indicator necessary for national prosperity. She can make a carbon cap a part of the Fed’s operations. This could take the form of a declining number of annual allowances to banks that provide loans to the energy and oil industry. The Federal Reserve could create levers to allow for additional economic growth in low-carbon activities, while reining in high-carbon industries.  Perhaps most importantly, she can harness the unique power of money creation to help people through the transition to a low-carbon economy.”

States turn against electric cars as gas tax revenues fall

“As of this year, Coloradans driving electric, alternative fuel and high-efficiency vehicles will pay a $50 registration fee to capture more revenue from vehicles that use less traditional gasoline. This is part of a growing trend by which states are looking to recoup declining gas tax revenues as vehicles become more fuel efficient and drivers buy more electric vehicles.  Colorado is one of at least five states that have special fees on hybrid and electric vehicles — Colorado, Nebraska, North Carolina, Virginia and Washington.  On the federal level, gas tax revenues have lost one-third of their value since 1993; the federal Highway Trust Fund could face insolvency in 2015 if this trend continues.”

Life in the Electronic Concentration Camp

AGOW_WebAD_Small2

“Whether it was collecting rainwater to water your lawn, lighting a cigarette in the privacy of your home, or gathering with friends in your backyard for a Sunday evening Bible study—the government will know each and every transgression and use them against you.  The electronic concentration camp is perhaps the most insidious of the police state’s many tentacles, impacting almost every aspect of our lives and making it that much easier for the government to encroach on our most vital freedoms, ranging from free speech, assembly and the press to due process, privacy, and property, by eavesdropping on our communications, tracking our movements and spying on our activities.”

Who Needs Bitcoin? Venezuela Has Its ‘Sucre’

“The late Venezuelan president created the sucre, a virtual currency designed to dethrone the dollar as the main trading currency used with his country’s regional trading partners: Ecuador, Cuba, Bolivia and Nicaragua.  The sucre is managed by a board of central-bank representatives, which has helped bolster its use.  Ecuadorean companies exported $737 million worth of goods to Venezuela using the sucre system in the first nine months of 2013, an 80% increase from the same period in 2012, according to Ecuador’s central bank. That growth has drawn attention from the country’s regulators, which are cracking down as fraud involving the virtual currency rises.”

The Mike Bloomberg Legacy: 12 Years of Little Tyrannies in 2 Minutes!

“After 12 years, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg leaves office on New Year’s Day, 2014.  His legacy goes far beyond his nanny state war on cigarette smoke, salts and fat, but into his use of the NYPD (which he described as ‘his personal army’) to spy on citizens and stop-and-frisk young men of color en masse, as well as his abuse of eminent domain to seize private property and hand it over to his fellow billionaire developers for massive vanity projects.  Reason TV takes a brief year-by-year look back at Mayor Bloomberg’s most outrageous assaults on freedom of choice and civil liberties.”

New laws in 2014: From tanning bed bans to ‘lemon pets’

“Colorado: Drivers will see a new annual $50 fee for plug-in electric cars. Colorado is one of several states looking to capture revenue from alternative fuel, electric and hybrid vehicles.  Connecticut: New gun-control laws in the aftermath of the school shooting in Newtown include mandatory registration of all assault weapons and large-capacity ammunition magazines bought before April 2013, and creation of a statewide registry that will track parolees whose crimes involved weapons.  Delaware: Sale, possession or distribution of shark fins prohibited.  Florida: Expanded early voting.  Maine: Becomes the 48th state to require a check-off for organ donation on driver’s licenses.”
