Most Government Workers Could Be Replaced By Robots, New Study Finds

“A study by a British think tank, Reform, says that 90% of British civil service workers have jobs so pointless, they could easily be replaced by robots, saving the government around $8 billion per year.  The study, published this week, says that robots are ‘more efficient’ at collecting data, processing paperwork, and doing the routine tasks that now fall to low-level government employees. Even nurses and doctors, who are government employees in the UK, could be relieved of some duties by mechanical assistants.”

More Americans support torture than Afghans, Iraqis and South Sudanese

“39 percent of the Americans who supported torture told the ICRC they ‘didn’t realize my country had agreed to ban torture’ as a signatory to the Geneva Conventions.  The ICRC study is not the first to establish Americans’ increasing tolerance for torture in recent years.  A Pew Research Center study in February found that 58 percent of Americans think the torture of suspected terrorists can be justified. Of 38 nations surveyed, only five countries have a higher tolerance for torturing suspected terrorists, the Pew study found: Uganda (78 percent), Lebanon (72 percent), Israel (62 percent), Kenya (62 percent) and Nigeria (61 percent).”

Revoke Obama’s Nobel Peace Prize

20131002_Cato1

“Obama now has the ignominious distinction of being continuously at war longer than any other American president in U.S. history.   Christof Heyns, the United Nations special rapporteur on extrajudicial killings, summary or arbitrary executions, told a conference in Geneva that President Obama’s drone strike program threatens 50 years of international law by encouraging other states to violate long-standing human rights standards.  After eight years of continuous warfare, the Nobel Committee should take another unprecedented action: It should revoke Obama’s peace prize and demand repayment of the prize money.”

Bruce Schneier: Economist Detained for Doing Math on an Airplane

“Economics professor Guido Menzio (yes, he’s Italian) was taken off the plane, questioned, cleared, and allowed to board with the rest of his passengers two hours later.  This is a result of our stupid ‘see something, say something’ culture. As I repeatedly say: ‘If you ask amateurs to act as front-line security personnel, you shouldn’t be surprised when you get amateur security.’  On the other hand, ‘Algebra, of course, does have Arabic origins plus math is used to make bombs.'”

41% of Trump Voters, 19% of Democrats Want to Bomb ‘Aladdin’ Country

“41% of his voters think Japanese internment was a good thing, to 37% who don’t. And 41% of his supporters would favor bombing Agrabah to only 9% who are opposed to doing that. Agrabah is the country from Aladdin. Overall 30% of Republican primary voters say they support bombing it to 13% who are opposed. We asked the same question of Democrats, and 36% of them opposed bombing Agrabah to 19% in support.”

Noninterventionism Is the Only Cure for America’s Foreign Policy Woes

hornberger1

“After the invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan, interventionists maintained that U.S. troops are over there killing the terrorists before they can come over here and kill us. That notion obviously hasn’t worked out extremely well.  Today Americans are more scared of the terrorists than ever before.  The war on terrorism racket is so ingenious that regardless of what happens, the U.S. national-security state benefits from it. That is, if there were no more terrorist attacks, interventionists would say, ‘We’ve got to stay the course because it’s working.’ But if there were more terrorist attacks, interventionists would say, ‘The danger is bigger than ever. We’ve got to stay the course until we kill them all.'”

Drone strikes in Oregon considered acceptable response by many

Search Twitter for ‘Oregon’ and ‘drone strike’ and you’ll find tons of people proposing to give the Malheur activists the Abdulrahman Awlaki treatment. TV host Montel Williams tweeted that the authorities should ‘put this down using National Guard with shoot to kill orders.’ ‘I hope they pull a M.O.V.E. on those terrorists in Oregon,’ wrote the author Jess Nevins, alluding to a black militant group whose Philadelphia headquarters were bombed by the police in 1985, killing 11 people and destroying dozens of homes.  Former Homeland Security official Juliette Kayyem declared on CNN’s website that the occupation in Oregon is terrorism ‘by any definition.’  Really? By ‘any’ definition?”

6,000 Cops, Checkpoints, Snipers, K-9s: A New Year in a Police State

“Armed with rifles, radiation detectors, and bomb-sniffing dogs, over 6,000 uniformed NYPD officers will descend upon the one million spectators expected to attend Times Square. Roughly 1,200 probationary cops and plainclothes police will also be assigned to either watch the perimeter or infiltrate the crowds while working undercover.  The crowd must enter at one of the 14 checkpoints and submit to body inspections with magnetometers and hand wands as counterterrorism officers armed with long guns stand by. After enduring a secondary screening, people will be allowed to watch the ball drop from one of the 65 massive spectator pens while surrounded by snipers and K-9 units.”

Americans: ‘Online Surveillance Is O.K. For Most’

“A majority of Americans say they support warrantless government surveillance of the Internet communications of U.S. citizens, according to a new [AP] poll.  It’s at least somewhat important for the government to sacrifice freedoms to ensure safety, most say in the survey. Majorities both of Republicans (67 percent) and Democrats (55 percent) favor government surveillance of Americans’ Internet activities to watch for suspicious activity that might be connected to terrorism. Independents are more divided, with 40 percent in favor and 35 percent opposed. Only a third of Americans under 30, but nearly two-thirds 30 and older, support warrantless surveillance.”

America’s New Female Combatants Are Getting Custom Gear

“The Army started issuing a female version of the Improved Outer Tactical Vest in Afghanistan in 2012. The vest is darted, to fit a woman’s torso more snugly. It’s also shorter, so women can sit without having the thing ride up into their chins. It even has a collar designed so it won’t snag on a hair bun. Similarly, the Marine Corps’ Plate Carrier (a vest that holds armor plates) is shorter, with narrower straps.  Still, this is about much more than making everything smaller. Another critical class of gear protects the pelvis. The Army developed seven sizes of its female-specific Protective Under Garmets to better fit a woman’s hips. Also, no fly.  Another critical class of gear protects the pelvis.”
