Air Force Spends $1 Billion On Software Now Declared Utter Failure

“The Expeditionary Combat Support System was heralded as a ‘revolutionary’ supply-chain management system that was sold to the people over at the Pentagon who did what they often do.  In the end, the Pentagon contractors and officials informed Congress that it would require $1.1 billion and eight years beyond the planned rollout date to fix the system. So we scrapped it. Another one billion evaporates and Pentagon officials just move on to the next program. No one is fired. No one is prosecuted. By the way, this is just one of nine massive software systems ordered by the Pentagon, and six are running as late as 12 years beyond their planned rollout date. Twelve years.”

Did anyone read the latest spending bill?

“The bill gives at least $62 million, and possibly as much as $119 million, to the United States Enrichment Corp., a government spinoff that last month announced plans to file for bankruptcy.  The bill blocks the Navy from retiring seven cruisers and two amphibious ships. It gave the Pentagon $950 million more than it wanted for one class of attack submarines. But the measure denied the Pentagon $8 million it sought to study more base closures.  The bill awards the Pentagon $666 million to study illnesses and afflictions ranging from Lou Gehrig’s disease to breast cancer — activities not closely related to war-fighting.  The bill gives the oil and nuclear industries a bonanza.”

Alfred McCoy: It’s About Blackmail, Not National Security

“For an imperial power losing its economic grip on the planet and heading into more austere times, the NSA’s latest technological breakthroughs look like a bargain basement deal when it comes to projecting power and keeping subordinate allies in line.  Even when disaster turned out to be attached to them, the NSA’s surveillance programs have come with such a discounted price tag that no Washington elite rejected them.  For well over a century, from the pacification of the Philippines in 1898 to trade negotiations with the European Union today, surveillance and its kissing cousins, scandal and scurrilous information, have been key weapons in Washington’s search for global dominion.”

Jack Lew to John Boehner: Raise debt ceiling in February

“The Obama administration wants Congress to raise the debt limit in the next 16 days.  Treasury Secretary Jack Lew sent a letter to Speaker John Boehner on Wednesday, saying the ‘best course of action would be for Congress to’ raise the nation’s debt limit ‘before February 7 to ensure orderly financing of the government.’ At the latest, Lew writes, Congress must lift the cap by the end of February.  The debt limit is not the fiscal standoff it used to be. When Republicans first took the House, they demanded deep cuts to spending as a price for increasing the national borrowing limit. Last time they lifted the cap, they did it without concessions from Democrats and President Barack Obama.”

Treasury Secretary Sends Warning on Debt Limit

“Treasury Secretary Jacob J. Lew warned Congress on Wednesday that the government would most likely exhaust its ability to borrow in late February, setting up yet another fiscal showdown with Republicans, and this time earlier than congressional leaders had anticipated.  In a letter to Speaker John A. Boehner and top congressional leaders, Mr. Lew said a surge of February spending, mainly tax refunds for 2013, would leave the Treasury with little room to maneuver after the official debt limit is reached on Feb. 7.  ‘Protecting the full faith and credit of the United States is the responsibility of Congress, because only Congress can extend the nation’s borrowing authority,’ Mr. Lew wrote.”

Lew Rockwell: American Fascism

“We know about the transformation of the American police, with their paramilitary equipment, their SWAT team raids, and incentive to terrorize people over drug offenses rather than pursue crimes against person and property. We know about the National Security Agency, which can access every American’s e-mails, phone calls, or text messages. And yet too many average Americans have greeted all this with indifference. This indifference, I suggest, derives from the widespread public acceptance of the myth of the state that Americans are taught from the moment they step into a government classroom.”

Who Read 1,582-Page $1.1T Spending Bill? Congressman: ‘Nobody Did’

“When asked whether he read the 1,528-page,  $1.1 trillion government spending bill before he voted for it yesterday, Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D-Ore.) said, ‘Nobody did!’  The $1.1 trillion bill will fund the federal government for the rest of fiscal year 2014, which ends on Sept. 30, 2014.   Sixty-four Republicans and three Democrats voted against the legislation. The final vote was 359-67. The legislation was opposed by conservative groups and conservative members of Congress.  The bill increases federal spending by $44.8 billion this year over the spending level previously set by Congress.”

The Consequence of Complacency Is Catastrophe

“It’s precisely because of rising stock markets — and the accompanying complacency — that we have the most to be concerned about for the long-term future.  Stock market euphoria is a powerful drug.  It’s an artificial stimulant for the economy, an antidepressant for investors who’ve suffered big losses, and a memory-blocker for bankers who helped cause the great debt crisis.  Moreover, it does nothing to resolve the continuing — and growing — threats. So before the great forgettery of 2014 sets in, let me remind you about just the main ones.”

Doug French: Signs That It’s Time to Head for the Exits

“Charles Mackay wrote in his classic book Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds, ‘Men, it has been well said, think in herds; it will be seen that they go mad in herds, while they only recover their senses slowly, and one by one.’  We are in the one-by-one process and the government knows it. The first signs of capital controls have surfaced. Toting $10,000 worth of financial instruments out of the country is verboten. The US government has signed agreements with countries and banks around the world to keep money inside the US.  But what happens when the citizenry want to leave the government’s currency? If history is any indication, the government will get mean.”

Wendy McElroy: America’s Surveillance State

mcelroy1

“The domestic surveillance state is sometimes called the electronic police state. Those in political power use law enforcement to closely monitor the opinions and peaceful behavior of citizens in order to forestall and punish opposition. Typically the surveillance involves secret files, covert wiretapping, informants, the collection of personal data such as sexual preferences, and other tactics that are odious to a free society. The domestic surveillance state is often associated with the East German Stasi or the Soviet KGB. But its roots are deep in American soil, and it is reaching full growth with the ‘war on terror.'”
