Locked up, because I went to a Texas national park without my papers

“I pointed across the river and told my father: ‘That’s Mexico,’ to which he replied: ‘Well if that’s Mexico, why does Donald Trump need to build a wall?’  The adults laughed at the joke and my three-year old asked if she could go potty – all of us unaware that we were in an area that is sometimes referred to as the border zone. I didn’t imagine that within the next six hours, I would be locked in a cell by US Border Patrol. My offense? I’m Canadian and I didn’t have my permanent resident card with me.”

Last flight for US-funded air war on drugs as Colombia counts health cost

For more than two decades crop dusters have buzzed the skies of Colombia showering bright green fields of coca with chemical defoliant as part of a US-funded effort to stem the country’s production of cocaine.  Farmers across the country have long complained that indiscriminate spraying also destroys legal crops, and that the chemical used – glyphosate – has caused everything from skin rashes and respiratory problems to diarrhoea and miscarriages.  Authorities in Colombia and the United States – which has funded the aerial eradication programme with as much as $2bn since 2000 – scoffed at those claims.”

Europe’s highest court strikes down Safe Harbor data sharing between EU, US

“The case was originally sent to the CJEU by the High Court of Ireland, after the Irish data protection authority rejected a complaint from Maximillian Schrems, an Austrian citizen. He had argued that in light of Snowden’s revelations about the NSA, the data he provided to Facebook that was transferred from the company’s Irish subsidiary to the US under the Safe Harbour scheme was not, in fact, safely harboured. Advocate General Yves Bot of the CJEU agreed with Schrems that the EU-US Safe Harbour system did not meet the requirements of the Data Protection Directive, because of NSA access to EU personal data.”

Thousands of Brazilians march for president’s removal

“Thousands took to the streets in cities across Brazil demanding that embattled President Dilma Rousseff — facing a weak economy and calls for her impeachment — be removed from office.  It was the fourth time this year that demonstrators across the sprawling nation of 204 million marched to demand the removal of the country’s first female president.  Political uncertainty is adding to the country’s economic woes, with GDP down 4.5 percent in the third quarter year-on-year, and the national currency down a third against the dollar this year.  With her approval ratings at only 10 percent, Rousseff has little political support to mount a defense.”

Jerry Seinfeld’s lemonade stand gets shut down by police

“Seinfeld and his family were shut down by East Hampton, New York, police on Tuesday, Aug. 18 for setting up a lemonade stand, reports CBS New York.  Seinfeld’s wife Jessica posted a photo on Instagram of her son, Julian, and two of his friends with their hands up (jokingly) amidst the police drama.  When officers arrived after a neighbor complained about illegally parked cars, they informed the Seinfelds that it is not legal to run a lemonade stand on village property.  ‘Lemonade dreams crushed by local neighbor, but not before raising lots of money for @loverecycled,’ Jessica Schneider wrote on Instagram. ‘Thanks to all of our customers and big tippers!'”

Drone Pilots Expose Civilian Murder, U.S. Freezes Their Financial Accounts

“The U.S. Government failed to deter them through threats of criminal prosecution, and clumsy attempts to intimidate their families. Now four former Air Force drone operators-turned-whistleblowers have had their credit cards and bank accounts frozen, according to human rights attorney Jesselyn Radack. Michael Haas, Brandon Bryant, Cian Westmoreland and Stephen Lewis, who served as drone operators in the US Air Force, have gone public with detailed accounts of the widespread corruption and institutionalized indifference to civilian casualties that characterize the program.”

‘There is no hiding place… our bombs will kill people’: Jeremy Corbyn

“Jeremy Corbyn today warned Labour MPs there is ‘no hiding place’ if they ignore his pleas and back British airstrikes against ISIS in Syria.  The Labour leader warned pro-bombing MPs they will have to answer to party members if they ignore grassroots opposition to military action in tomorrow’s crunch vote and support action which will lead to civilian deaths.  In an attempt to apply more pressure Stop the War supporters will march on Labour’s headquarters in London tonight after gathering in Parliament Square. Mr Corbyn was humiliated by his own shadow cabinet yesterday, when frontbenchers lined up to insist they would vote in favour of bombing ISIS.”

Hollande begs UK Labour Party to back bombing ISIS in Syria

“President Hollande issued a dramatic appeal to Labour MPs last night to allow
Britain to join the bombing campaign against Islamic State in Syria, further
isolating Jeremy Corbyn. France’s Socialist leader said that action was needed ‘to defend our vision of mankind’. ‘I do hope that the House of Commons will be able to meet the
request of the prime minister,’ he told a news conference in Malta. Later he made clear that he was addressing all MPs, and asked them to ‘show solidarity with France’. Tom Watson, the deputy Labour leader, joined a growing mutiny against Mr
Corbyn’s refusal.”

Pew Poll: More Than 1 In 4 Americans Believe Government Is The Enemy

“The findings suggests that 57 percent of voters feel frustrated with the government, while 22 percent feel angry and 18 percent feel ‘basically content.’  The majority of Americans feel the federal government has room for serious improvement, with 59 percent saying the government needs ‘very major reform.’ Only 37 percent of voters felt that way in 1997. Other findings include that few think the government is run for the benefit of all the people and that it is viewed as wasteful and inefficient. About 3 in 4 Americans say the federal government is ‘run by a few big interests’ and 57 percent say the ‘government is almost always wasteful and inefficient.'”

Obama-led drone strikes kill innocents 90% of the time: report

“Drone strikes conducted by the United States during a 5-month-long campaign in Afghanistan caused the deaths of unintended targets nearly nine out of ten times, leaked intelligence documents suggest.  The apparent 10 percent success rate with regards to a specific span in America’s drone war is among the most damning revelations to surface so far as the result of a series of articles published by The Intercept on Thursday this week which rely on classified and confidential intelligence documents supplied by an unknown source. ‘These docs illustrate what a video game, drained of all humanity, these drone assassinations have become,’ founding editor Glenn Greenwald tweeted.”
