Breaking the last taboo – Gaza and the threat of world war

“Since 2001, the United States and its allies have been on a rampage. In Iraq, at least 700,000 men, woman and children are dead as a result. The rise of jihadists – in a country where there was none – is the result. Known as al-Qaeda and now the Islamic State, modern jihadism was invented by US and Britain, assisted by Pakistan and Saudi Arabia. The original aim was to use and develop an Islamic fundamentalism that had barely existed in much of the Arab world in order to undermine pan-Arab movements and secular governments. By the 1980s, this had become a weapon to destroy the USSR in Afghanistan. The CIA called it Operation Cyclone; and a cyclone it turned out to be.”

Ameri-Canadians point fury at Uncle Sam over U.S. tax laws

“Canada has for centuries provided a haven for millions of Americans and their descendants, including the United Empire Loyalists who fled persecution during the 18th-century American Revolution, blacks escaping from slavery during the 19th century and draft resisters protesting the Vietnam War in the 20th century. Such Ameri-Canadians have tended to blend into this northern country. Now, open displays of American pride in Canada are becoming even less likely as Ameri-Canadians seek shelter from the long reach of FATCA.   Many Canadians don’t realize Americans have made up the fourth to sixth largest immigrant group in Canada for decades.”

Tax Exiles Flee America

“Traditionally the entrepreneurial and productive wanted to come to America. Many still do. But the choice is no longer so clear-cut. Some lawyers admit that they counsel foreign businessmen to consider carefully before seeking American citizenship. It might not be worth the cost and trouble. International tax attorney Andrew Mitchel said, ‘My advice to, say, a small-businessman abroad would be to think twice about acquiring U.S. citizenship.’ In his view the benefits might not be worth the hassle: ‘Many of these people do not realize what that means for their businesses until they start dealing with the IRS.’ Washington’s behavior appears to be having an impact on possible new citizens.”

U.K. promises Scots more power if they vote ‘no’ on independence

“The British government is scrambling to respond to a lurch in the opinion polls towards a vote for Scottish independence this month by promising a range of new powers for Scotland if it chooses to stay within the United Kingdom.  British finance minister George Osborne said on Sunday that plans would be set out in the coming days to give Scotland more autonomy on tax, spending and welfare if Scots vote against independence in a historic referendum on Sept. 18.  Osborne’s comments came after a YouGov poll for the Sunday Times showed supporters of independence had taken their first opinion poll lead since the referendum campaign began.”

My journey from war to peace

“On September 11, 2010, I was saying goodbye to my family and friends, for what I thought may be the last time ever, as I boarded a plane to Afghanistan. Nine years after the attack on 9-11 I wasn’t a boy any longer, and I was off to fight the war I had seen begin in my seventh grade classroom.  Nine years is a long time and a lot had changed in that decade of my life, but the constant that remained was my country’s hatred for the Muslim community. One could even say it intensified. The whole country had bought into it, and I am still ashamed to say that I did also.  I found myself in a situation that changed my life forever, and, although, I would rather not recount it here, I will share what I learned.”

Thousands of Germans rally to end government spying

“The rally in Berlin against federal surveillance gathered thousands of people under the motto ‘Freedom not fear,’ who were calling for stricter control of German intelligence agencies.  The organizers said about 6,500 demonstrators, a broad coalition of pro-transparency, anti-surveillance and civil rights groups including the E.F.F., Reporters Without Borders, Digital Courage, and Amnesty International joined the rally as they marched from the Brandenburg Gate to the Federal Chancellery.  The American Internet activist and journalist Jacob Appelbaum called on activists to not be afraid to expose government secrets, with many in the crowd holding Edward Snowden signs.”

Germany’s Green Energy Revolution May Be on Verge of Failure

the-daily-bell-top-logo61

“German officials and legislators created laws that ‘guaranteed a fixed feed-in tariff for 20 years, guaranteeing a fixed income’ for producers. Yet this guarantee was probably generated without doing a proper cost-benefit analysis. Now German taxpayers are stuck paying bills they cannot afford. Not only that, but Germany is closing coal and nuclear powered plants at an accelerated rate. And the new energy creation must be deployed via power lines that must either be built or upgraded. The result is that German consumers are facing ever higher energy bills, so much so that a rising percentage of Germans are choosing to have their power shut off rather than pay escalating fees.”

British families billed £500 – to prevent Americans dodging tax

“Draconian legislation enacted in America – and aimed solely at helping American authorities collect tax from their overseas citizens – is translating into bills of hundreds of pounds for ordinary British families.  The total cost to British businesses and individuals of abiding by the new US laws, which became effective here only last month, is put at £1bn. Most people will pay unknowingly through higher fees for their investments, banking and other services. But for some families the costs are more explicit. And the invoices are starting to land on their doormats.  Tens of thousands of families are beginning to receive letters, and invoices, simply because they have established run-of-the-mill family trusts.”

Grandmother in violent SWAT raid for neighbor’s wireless internet use

“The ostensible reason for the raid was that someone had anonymously posted some internet tough-talk on an online discussion forum, and referred to the Evansville police.  The subsequent violence directed at the Milan household was to serve a search warrant to find out who was responsible.  The alleged ‘specific threats’ were posted in a discussion on the topix.com website. One of the posts declared: ‘Cops beware! I’m proud of my country but I hate police of any kind. I have explosives… Made in America. Evansville will feel my pain.’  In response, police packed their own guns and explosives and headed out to raid the owner of the IP address from which the posts had been made.”
