Egypt battles energy crunch with ban on too-cold air conditioners

“Egypt, grappling with an energy crunch, will enforce a ban on the production and import of air conditioners that can be set lower than 20oC, aiming to reassure citizens and industry hit with power cuts and fuel shortages.  The ban on air conditioners outside the government’s specification will contribute to ‘easing the burden on Egyptian families,’ the minister added.  Long lines at gas stations and power cuts fuelled popular anger against president Mohamed Morsi ahead of his ouster by the army last summer.  He said the government will make a bigger push to distribute smart cards for fuel to cut smuggling and black market selling of gasoline.”

U.S., Europe Still Funding Egypt Military Oppression With Billions

“European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton criticized the use of force by the military-backed government, but later assured Sisi that the EU would provide 90 million euros worth of financial assistance. And in December 2013, she even took her family on a Christmas holiday to Luxor, meeting with Egypt’s minister of tourism just a few weeks after dozens of peaceful protesters were killed.  The U.S. case is similar. According to U.S. law, a coup is supposed to have consequences.   The U.S. government refuses to even obey its own laws, which would entail cutting the $1.3 billion it sends every year to the Egyptian military. Too much is at stake for powerful interests.”

Missouri Sends National Guard Troops Into Ferguson

“In the days since a black teenager was shot to death by a white police officer here on Aug. 9, an array of state and local law enforcement authorities have swerved from one approach to another: taking to the streets in military-style vehicles and riot gear; then turning over power to a State Highway Patrol official who permitted the protests and marched along; then calling again for a curfew.  Early Monday morning, after a new spate of violence, Gov. Jay Nixon said he was bringing in the National Guard.  Scores of people marched peacefully, carrying signs and chanting. Officers herded some into a parking lot, where the police said protest was permitted.”

Ferguson is an occupation in plain sight

“An alderman was arrested. Reporters from the Washington Post and Huffington Post were arrested. An Al Jazeera America news crew was attacked with teargas and had their equipment dismantled. Nonviolent protestors were confronted by a police department that is, in fact, an armed militia. The crowd stood before armored personnel carriers and men wearing Swat gear. There were snipers, aiming their rifles at unarmed, nonviolent citizens. The catalyst for all this was the killing of 18-year-old unarmed Mike Brown by an unnamed police officer later placed on paid administrative leave. He is being protected and compensated in the wake of Brown’s death.”

Dear police: The world is watching when you kill our children

“There are good reasons to distrust the information found in social media; incorrect reports, false reports, or outright bullshit can lead to online witch hunts like we saw in the wake of the Boston Marathon bombing. But official media narratives can be just as sketchy. An AP report filed on Sunday claimed that crowds around the crime scene shouted ‘kill the police’ at dozens of heavily armed officers from more than 15 police departments. Local witnesses dispute that claim.  Everyone is watching now. A powerful Twitter topic, #IfTheyGunnedMeDown, went big last night. It asks a simple question: what picture of you will be shown on television when you’re shot by the police?”

“There’s no follow-up to the jaw-dropping assertion that only 13 percent of US citizens believe government ‘can be trusted’ to do the right thing. These are not normal numbers. These are Soviet Union style numbers. Or numbers that might have generated from a poll of Chinese during the depth of the starvation generated by Mao’s ruinous Great Leap Forward. For the longest time, we’ve been told that the horrible numbers associated with US Congress – confidence is reportedly in the single digits now – must be tempered by people’s affection for their OWN congress-people. But if these larger numbers are to be believed, then the lack of support for Congress must be a fairly accurate assessment.”

The USDA also has the authority to set nutritional standards for all foods regularly sold in schools during the school day, including vending machines, the ‘a la carte’ lunch lines, school stores and the traditional K-12 bake sale.  More bake sales are offering processed, pre-packaged goods because the nutritional contents are clearly labeled.”

Okla. prison head gets new bullet-resistant SUV after botched execution

“The Oklahoma Department of Corrections has increased security for its new director, Robert Patton, following disturbing phone calls and emails after a botched execution. The agency recently spent $32,627 for a bullet-resistant sport utility vehicle with tinted windows, according to records provided by the Office of Management and Enterprise Services, which approved the purchase. Additional items including a light package and radio brought the total to $40,587, according to the Oklahoma Department of Corrections.  Patton is currently being escorted by bodyguards.”
