The Silence of American Hawks About Kiev’s Atrocities

“For weeks, the US-backed regime in Kiev has been committing atrocities against its own citizens in southeastern Ukraine, regions heavily populated by Russian-speaking Ukrainians and ethnic Russians. While victimizing a growing number of innocent people, including children, and degrading America’s reputation, these military assaults on cities, captured on video, are generating pressure in Russia on President Vladimir Putin to ‘save our compatriots.’  The reaction of the Obama administration—as well as the new cold-war hawks in Congress and in the establishment media—has been twofold: silence interrupted only by occasional statements excusing and thus encouraging more atrocities by Kiev.”

Americans’ sense of freedom drops below Paraguay, Rwanda

“This Independence Day, Americans will celebrate the nation’s core values, especially freedom. But according to a new international poll, Americans have become significantly ‘less satisfied with the freedom to choose what they want to do with their lives.’  Seventy-nine percent of US residents are satisfied with their level of freedom, down from 91 percent in 2006, according to the Gallup survey, released Tuesday.  That 12-point drop pushes the United States from among the highest in the world in terms of perceived freedom to 36th place, outside the top quartile of the 120 countries sampled, trailing Paraguay, Rwanda, and the autonomous region of Nagorno-Karabakh.”

More than half the members of Congress are millionaires

“Wealthy members of Congress are living the high life at taxpayer expense, while most of the rest of the country continues to suffer through one of the worst economic periods in our lifetimes.  According to a CSRP analysis, more than half of the members of Congress are millionaires.  This is the first time that this has ever happened in U.S. history.  In addition, the same study found that a hundred members of Congress are actually worth at least five million dollars.  We have a government of the wealthy, by the wealthy and for the wealthy, but as you will see below, that isn’t stopping members of Congress from wasting taxpayer money in some incredibly bizarre ways.”

Hundreds stranded by French air traffic controller strike

“Hundreds of British air passengers have been left stranded after a French air traffic control strike caused five times as many flight cancellations as predicted.  Airlines said they expected further cancellations on Wednesday and warned of potentially worse delays to all flights crossing French airspace.  The International Air Transport Association (IATA) strongly condemned the strike action, saying it targeted holidaymakers at the start of the busy summer season.  Members of the two biggest air traffic controllers’ unions in France originally voted for a six-day strike from Tuesday in protest at budget cuts. However, one of the unions decided to drop strike action.”

Eric Clapton Cites Security Hassles as Reason He’ll Stop Touring

“There’s just 25 months left to see Eric Clapton on tour. The legendary guitarist says that he’s going to quit the road life when he turns 70 years old because getting from show to show is too much of a pain. ‘The bit on stage, that’s easy,’ he says before insisting he’ll stay active playing around his hometown.  Clapton, who turns 70 on March 30, 2015, says security and immigration officials are two groups of people he’ll be glad to be rid of. ‘I never get it right. I forget to take off my belt, or I have change in my pocket,’ he tells Rolling Stone. ‘Next thing I know, ‘Can you come over here please?’ I just don’t want to do that anymore.'”

Growing Warmist Intolerance Threatens Social and Legal Fabric

the-daily-bell-top-logo61

“This is really an outrageous letter in that it equates legitimate differences of opinion with an attack on state policy. The implication, of course, is that ‘undermining’ is illegal.  There are real costs to these promotions. People’s careers and livelihoods are affected.  Not only is this sort of warmist intolerance affecting individual careers, it is also depriving groups – even whole continents – of the right to a broad energy marketplace. As in other areas, warmist tactics and intolerance increasingly polarize issues and make rational discussion difficult to pursue. When political interactions become marginalized, or even criminalized, then authoritarianism inevitably expands.”

Europe’s Political Response To Voters May Increase Violence

the-daily-bell-top-logo61

“No matter what voters say about the EU, the leaders of Britain and Europe attempt to use the sentiment to support the EU – at least in some form.  Every setback is merely a further opportunity to create a more responsive and ultimately more amalgamated EU. The disconnect between political systems in both the US and the EU and the voters is growing deeper.  This EU vote and the political responses to it do nothing to reverse this trend.  If the political system is incapable of representing the ‘will’ of the people – even at the most cosmetic level – then the chances for less civil and more violent change increases. Is that the ‘real’ desired outcome?”

U.S. air base in pro-Moscow Kyrgyzstan will be abandoned

“A U.S. Air Force base in Kyrgyzstan is packing up for closure after more than 12 years of flying troops and cargo in and out of Afghanistan, as Moscow boosts its military clout in the strategic region.  The Manas Transit Center in the ex-Soviet nation’s main civilian airport has been in operation since the end of 2001, serving the U.S.-led war in Afghanistan codenamed Operation Enduring Freedom.  As Kyrgyzstan seeks closer political ties and economic aid from its ex-Soviet overlord Russia, the national parliament last June gave Washington until July 2014 to close its base.”

Turkey mine collapse: Erdogan told protesters they would be slapped

“Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Turkey’s prime minister, faced fresh allegations on Saturday over his conduct following the country’s worst mine disaster after he was heard telling protesters they would be ‘slapped’ for booing him. A recording of the threat was made public after the Turkish leader allegedly punched a man in a supermarket in the western town of Soma as crowds voiced anger over the tragedy.  Criticism of his behaviour intensified further when Evrensel, a Turkish newspaper, reported that he repeatedly punched a teenage girl who had shouted at him: ‘What is the murderer of my father doing here?'”

Feds May Cut Off Water For Legal Marijuana Crops

“Some cannabis growers may soon find themselves with a lot less irrigation water if the U.S. government decides to block the use of federal water for state-legal marijuana cultivation.  The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, which oversees management of federal water resources, ‘is evaluating how the Controlled Substances Act applies [to] water being used to facilitate marijuana-related activities,’ said the bureau.   Local water districts in Washington state and Colorado, where recreational marijuana is now legal, contract with federal water projects for supplies. Officials from some of those water districts said they assume the feds are going to turn off the spigots for marijuana growers.”
