Syria air defense head killed by US-backed jihadist rebels

“‘We announce good news to the Islamic nation, of the killing of one of the leaders of unbelief, General Hussein Yaqoub Ishaq, head of the Air Defense Administration in Mleiha,’ the Islamic Front said in a statement.  Assad’s family is from Syria’s Alawite minority, who mostly support the president, and many Christians also back him, fearing the increasingly radicalized Sunni Muslim rebels. The rebels who took over Tel Malah included fighters from the Nusra Front – al Qaeda’s official branch in Syria – the Islamic Front.  Assad is now preparing for a presidential election which is widely expected to extend his 14-year rule for another seven-year term.”

Proposed Iraqi law would legalize marital rape, child marriage

“A vision of a theocracy in Iraq is seemingly more within reach for these groups now that the U.S. presence has waned; this week’s elections will be the first since the U.S. military troop withdrawal in 2011.  The party proposed similar rules in 2004, after Saddam Hussein, a Sunni, was routed from power and Iraqi politicians began cobbling together interim constitutions and governments.   For Faiza Babakhan, an activist and former parliamentarian, the new law signals an erosion of women’s rights that has left her and other women reminiscing about Iraq under Saddam.”

Anti-China riots in Vietnam ease after 1,400 protesters arrested

“Anti-China protests in Vietnam eased yesterday after the arrest of more than 1,400 demonstrators.  There were no reports of fresh violence following the deadly wave of unrest that swept through 22 of Vietnam’s 63 provinces from Tuesday.  It was triggered by China’s deployment of an oil rig in the disputed Paracel Islands in the South China Sea.  More than 400 factories were damaged by mobs and the Chinese foreign ministry confirmed yesterday that two Chinese nationals had been killed.  Many Chinese in Vietnam were still fearful for their safety yesterday as speculation mounted about another demonstration tomorrow.”

Oklahoma execution renews debate on doctors’ role in lethal injection

“A botched lethal injection in Oklahoma this week has renewed a debate on whether doctors should be banned from executions — or required to participate to make the process more humane.  Some of the nation’s 32 death penalty states mandate doctor participation — including Oklahoma — but critics say what happened there proves a doctor’s presence can’t guarantee the process will go smoothly.  The AMA says it’s unethical for doctors to be involved except in a peripheral way. That’s one reason why the number and identities of physicians who do participate are shrouded in secrecy.”

More Renounce US Citizenship but Deny Stereotype

“Renouncers — whose ranks have swelled more than five-fold from a decade ago — often contradict the stereotype of the financial scoundrel. Many are from very ordinary economic circumstances.  Some call themselves ‘accidental Americans,’ who recall little of life in the U.S., but long ago happened to be born in it. In recent years, federal officials have stepped up pursuit of potential tax evaders, using the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act. Those trying to comply complain of costly fees for accountants and lawyers, having to report the income of non-American spouses, and decisions by some European banks to close accounts of U.S. citizens or deny them loans.”

Will Facebook Bring Down the Government?

portallogo3

“This sharp decline in trust has not been triggered by a particular event. In other words, the federal government cannot reverse this decline by changing its position on any particular piece of objectionable legislation or enforcement. The government now has to hope that this decline in trust will be reversed by nothing in particular. If it cannot be reversed, then the government’s ability to use coercion to gain specific public responses is going to decline. Too many people will not cooperate.  We do not see any major change in policy in Congress. We do not see any particular branch of government encountering anything resembling organized resistance. But trust is rapidly disappearing.”

Rasmussen Poll: 37% of Voters Fear the Federal Government

“Thirty-seven percent (37%) of Likely U.S. Voters now fear the federal government, according to a new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey.  Perhaps in part that’s because 54% consider the federal government today a threat to individual liberty rather than a protector. Just 22% see the government as a protector of individual rights, and that’s down from 30% last November. Two-out-of-three voters (67%) view the federal government today as a special interest group that looks out primarily for its own interests. Just 17% disagree, while 15% are undecided.  Only 19% now trust the federal government to do the right thing most or nearly all the time, down from 24% in June.”

The Netherlands Must Police Downloading, EU Court Rules

“The European Court of Justice has ruled that the Netherlands can no longer permit its citizens to freely download copyrighted movies and music without paying for them. In its judgment the Court rules that the current system of a “piracy levy” to compensate rightsholders is unlawful. Today’s judgment is also likely to affect other European countries with similar systems, such as Switzerland where downloading pirated works for personal use is also permitted.  The Dutch Government confirmed to Tweakers that downloading copyrighted material for personal use is no longer allowed, effective immediately.”

At Least 46 Killed in Two Days of US Drone Strikes in Yemen

“After yesterday’s attack, which killed 21, reports of today’s strikes are still murky, but at least 25 more were killed, sending the figure to 46, and likely to rise even further as the figures continue to come in from remote areas.  Officially, the Yemeni government referred to the slain today as ‘leading and dangerous’ al-Qaeda figures, but tellingly offered not a single name of a single victim of the attacks.  While today’s victims remain a mystery, a number of civilian bystanders were confirmed killed in yesterday’s attack, which targeted a truckload of ‘suspects’ and destroyed some nearby cars.”
