Google is encrypting search globally, against NSA and China’s censors.

“Google has begun routinely encrypting Web searches conducted in China, posing a bold new challenge to that nation’s powerful system for censoring the Internet and tracking what individual users are viewing online.  The company says the move is part of a global expansion of privacy technology designed to thwart surveillance by government intelligence agencies, police and hackers who, with widely available tools, can view e-mails, search queries and video chats when that content is unprotected.  The development is the latest consequence of Edward Snowden’s release last year of NSA documents detailing the extent of government surveillance of the Internet.”

Zuckerberg voices frustration with Obama over NSA

“Posting on his Facebook page Thursday, Zuckerberg wrote that he’s been ‘confused and frustrated by the repeated reports of the behavior of the U.S. government. When our engineers work tirelessly to improve security, we imagine we’re protecting you against criminals, not our own government.’  Though Zuckerberg does not name the National Security Agency, the post comes a day after the news site Intercept reported that the agency has impersonated a Facebook server to infect surveillance targets’ computers and get files from a hard drive. The report is based on documents leaked by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden.”

Gov’t takes nearly half of California couple’s $10M backyard gold find

“One couple’s gold find could mean a jackpot for the IRS.  The Northern California couple that found $10 million worth of rare, mint-condition gold coins buried in the shadow of an old tree on their property will likely owe about half the find’s value whether they sell the gold or not.  The San Francisco Chronicle reports that the find is a taxable event under a 1969 federal court ruling that held a ‘treasure trove’ is taxable the year it was discovered. The report says after all is said and done, about 47 percent will go to state and federal tax, or the top tax rate.  Nearly all of the 1,427 coins that were found, dating from 1847 to 1894, were in uncirculated, mint condition.”

Who Is Most Excited For Athletes To Win Olympic Gold? The IRS.

“The IRS wants to collect a large percentage of the prize money awarded by the USOC for medal winners based on the US’s horrible tax policy on wages earned overseas. The US is one of the few nations in the world to tax foreign earnings, a move that has driven businesses away from our shores even more than our insanely high corporate tax rate. And now this terrible policy is taking money out of the thin and worn pockets of Olympic athletes who are representing our nation in the games.  Despite the waving of the flag, the benefit of US exposure from the games and the chants of ‘USA! USA!’ that will echo through the mountains of Sochi, the State has but one goal.”

Infuriated Taxpayers Berate School Superintendent for $663,365 Salary

“Earlier this week, unfortunate residents of the Centinela Valley School District (amid the suburban sprawl of Los Angeles) absolutely reamed district superintendent Jose Fernandez for his laughably exorbitant, perk-filled salary package.  On the backs of local taxpayers, the paper-pushing boss “earns” an annual salary of $665,365, reports KTLA.  In addition to the lucrative paycheck, the school board has also provided a sweetheart mortgage deal to help Fernandez buy his suburban home.  This mortgage benefit – a $910,000 loan at just 2 percent interest – was especially helpful for Fernandez, given his financial troubles. Fernandez recently emerged from bankruptcy.”

Guy Runs 3,000 Miles Raising Bitcoin For Homeless After Friend Killed

“Homeless advocate, runner, and Bitcoin lover Jason King has combined all three together for an epic adventure. He’s running across the country — some 3,100 miles — to raise money in Bitcoin for the homeless.  He’s the founder of Sean’s Outpost, a homeless outreach center in Pensacola, Fla., which is named for King’s best friend who was allegedly robbed and then killed in 2012.  Sean’s Outpost discovered it could do more to house and feed people when it received Bitcoin donations.  Sean’s Outpost went from being able to provide 50 meals a week to thousands per week. Then it built homes for them, hiring the homeless to do the work and teaching them a job skill along the way.”

Venezuela students protesting economy shot dead by gunmen

“At least three people were shot dead as violence erupted during anti-government protests in the Venezuelan capital, Caracas, on Wednesday.  Students in the western states of Tachira and Merida have been at the forefront of the protests, saying they are fed up with the lack of security and the poor state of Venezuela’s economy.  The country has the highest inflation rate in the region at 56.2% in 2013, according to official figures.  It is also beset by shortages, with shoppers often having to search a number of supermarkets for staples such as milk and toilet paper.  The government has blamed the shortages on ‘saboteurs’ and ‘profit-hungry corrupt businessmen’.”

Woman with HIV alleges police bias in suit against Dearborn

“Jones’ vehicle, driven by a companion, was stopped Aug. 3, 2012, reportedly for a broken tail light and she ultimately was ticketed for marijuana possession. On the video, the officer is recorded telling Jones she was ticketed because he was ‘aggravated’ she hadn’t disclosed her HIV-positive status before the search.  The officer’s statements were ‘cruel, discriminatory as to her disability, and did cause emotional harm and embarrassment,’ according to the lawsuit.  In September, Dearborn dismissed a misdemeanor marijuana charge against Jones, her attorneys said.”

Officer kills family’s dog while ‘searching’ across front yards

“Police said the officer — a one-year veteran of the force who was not identified — was canvassing a neighborhood looking for witnesses around 4 p.m. Saturday. When the officer went to a home in 900 block of Lombardee Circle in Glen Burnie the dog — a male Chesapeake Bay Retriever named Vern — ‘confronted’ the officer in the front yard, police said. The officer then fired his weapon twice, killing the dog, police said.  The family said the officer wanted to interview a neighbor and was walking across the front yards of homes on the street when the shooting happened. The Reeves family was not involved in the burglary investigation that brought the officer to their neighborhood.”
