Americans Renouncing Citizenship Up 221% In 2013

“Record numbers of U.S. citizens and permanent residents are giving up their citizenship or residency. For all the immigrant arrivals the trickle the other direction is increasing. The number is still small, with the ‘published’ expatriates for the quarter 630 for the last quarter of 2013.  That brings the total number to 2,999 for all of 2013. The previous record high for a year was 1,781 set in 2011. It’s a 221% increase over the 932 who left in 2012. You can call it a shaming or a public record, but the Treasury Department is required to publish a quarterly list of Americans who renounced their U.S. Citizenship or terminated their long-term U.S. residency.”

Civilian drone deaths triple in Afghanistan, UN agency finds

“The report, by the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (Unama), found that drone strikes accounted for at least a third of all civilian deaths in air strikes last year. Unama notes that it is sometimes difficult to establish which type of aircraft carried out a strike, so the true total could be higher.  The UK and US are the only countries to operate armed drones in the conflict. A December 2012 report by the Bureau found that the two forces had carried out over 1,000 drone strikes in the country in the previous five years. British drones have carried out over a fifth of all these strikes, despite having a much smaller fleet.”

“Her name is Chloe Stirling and her crime was doing something that we used to applaud young people in America for doing.  Instead of sitting on her sofa and watching television all day, she actually started her own business.  And it turned out there her little business started thriving.  In fact, it started doing so well that a local newspaper took notice of it.  Well, that is when the control freaks swooped in and took her business away and banned her from selling any more cupcakes.  The really sad thing is that people are being paid to do this with our tax dollars.  All over America, little entrepreneurs are having their lemonade stands shut down and are being banned from selling Girl Scout cookies.”

HSBC dumps small business accounts for multinationals

“Banking giant HSBC is dumping some of its small business clients in favour of those with more internationally-oriented profiles.  Linda Bryan is the owner of a small pharmacy in White Rock, B.C., who has been banking with HSBC for 17 years. Recently, she received a letter from the bank informing her she has 60 days to transition to another financial institution.  And she’s not alone.   HSBC has been sending similar letters to small business owners in Canada and the United States for about a month. The bank will not say how many customers it is ridding itself of, but the number is large.  The Canadian Federation of Independent Business says the move is unacceptable.”

Firefighters Refuse to Help Dying Man Because He Did Not Call 9-1-1

“Three different rotations of people knocked on the firehouse door requesting help for the 77-year-old, and all of them were rebuffed by the firefighters who repeated to each of them that they couldn’t respond unless someone called 911. Nearly 20 minutes later, help finally arrived thanks D.C. police officer who flagged an ambulance down. Mills died on the way to the hospital.  ‘There are no words to describe how this city has failed,’ his daughter told the Washington Post on Wednesday, prompting District authorities to investigate the 15 firefighters who are now being questioned for their lack of response during a time of emergency.”

Medical marijuana kids bring Oklahoma families to Colorado

Age 6 at the time, Zoey had the developmental level of a 2-year-old.  Johnson’s father, Marty Piel, is expected to appear at a hearing along with other proponents before Oklahoma state lawmakers on Feb. 12. He said they hope for some kind of narrow exception in the state’s drug laws for children like Zoey.  Mark Woodward, a spokesman for the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs, said the agency is currently opposed to legalizing medications such as Charlotte’s Web. He said the agency believes for safety’s sake, the drug should go through the same federal approval process as others.”

Feds seize $27K from couple, give $500 back for “humanitarian purposes”

“Federal agents at the Philadelphia International Airport Sunday seized nearly $27,000 from a Ghana couple after the duo allegedly failed to report the cash.  Investigators said the couple was after their arrival from Germany referred to a secondary inspection during which the man said he had $6,000. When U.S. Customs and Border Protections officers explained federal currency reporting requirements, the man revised his estimate and wrote he had $16,000, according to authorities. A baggage examination allegedly turned up multiple envelopes containing $27,431.30 in U.S. currency, British pounds, Swiss francs and Ghana cedi. Officers returned $500 to the couple for ‘humanitarian purposes.'”

City of Lee’s Summit forces kids to tear down fort

“It all started with kids grabbing some scraps of wood and learning together how to build something, but Friday the Bobcats taught them a different lesson: you can’t always keep what you want.  The Pergola neighborhood kids built a fort on an empty lot with scraps from construction on the surrounding larger homes.  ‘They don’t care what it looks like. It’s not about outer beauty, it’s about the fun, the cohesion between the kids,’ said neighbor Chris Pate.  But building inspectors checked it out and told the neighbors it didn’t meet city code, so it had to come down. ‘My 6-year-old was pretty mad and said he didn’t want to live in the city of Lee’s Summit anymore,” said neighbor Kim Sharp.”

In U.S., 65% Dissatisfied With How Gov’t System Works

“Sixty-five percent of Americans are dissatisfied with the nation’s system of government and how well it works, the highest percentage in Gallup’s trend since 2001. Dissatisfaction is up five points since last year, and has edged above the previous high from 2012 (64%).  These findings are from Gallup’s annual Mood of the Nation poll, conducted Jan. 5-8, 2014. The trend line on this measure shows remarkable change over time, rising from fewer than one in four Americans expressing dissatisfaction in 2002, after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, to the current situation in which almost two-thirds are dissatisfied.”
