Swiss banks agree to U.S. plan on tax evasion

“Three Swiss banks have agreed to participate in a U.S. disclosure program aimed at lenders suspected of aiding tax evasion by Americans. Swiss banks had until Monday to tell the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority, the country’s banking regulator, if they would participate. The first deadline for the banks to notify U.S. authorities of their intentions falls at the end of the month.  The program is a key element in a U.S. effort to sidestep Switzerland’s bank-secrecy laws.  The program has met resistance from Switzerland’s financial sector, which has complained of the cost of complying, particularly for the country’s hundreds of small and medium-size banks.”

Homeless Men Wish They’d Gone Hungry Instead of Spending Bitcoins

“Jesse Angle, Chris Kantola, and Paul Harrison were jobless and homeless for much of the past year, but thanks in part to Bitcoin — the world’s most popular digital currency — they never went without food.  Some of it arrived through donations. Some of it came from rather unsophisticated online services that dole out tiny fractions of the digital currency if you spend some time looking at videos and ads. And over the course of the summer, this free money bought them a pretty steady supply of pizza and chicken tenders.  Today, the trio is off the streets, and life is even better than it was before — except that a bitcoin is now worth over $1,000.”

Man arrested, charged with theft for plugging car into school’s outlet

“A man in an Atlanta suburb was confronted by a police officer for plugging his electric car into an outside outlet at a school. Ten days later, he was arrested at home and charged with theft for taking about 5 cents worth of electricity ‘without consent.’  Kaveh Kamooneh plugged an extension cable from his Nissan Leaf into a 110-volt external outlet at Chamblee Middle School while his son was practicing tennis. A short time later, he noticed someone in his car and went to investigate—and found that the man was a Chamblee police officer. Sgt. Ernesto Ford told 11 News that ‘a theft is a theft,’ and that he would arrest anyone for charging their car from an outlet without permission.”

EU seeks ‘ban on all currently available e-cigarettes’

“The EU wants all electronic cigarettes removed from shop shelves because they ‘normalise the action of smoking’.   The bid to ban e-cigarettes drew anger from suppliers in Britain, where some 1.3 million of the current 10 million smokers have switched to the electronic devices.  François Digard, mayor of Saint-Lo in La Manche region of Normandy passed a decree this month outlawing electronic cigarettes, after receiving several complaints from residents.  ‘The e-cigarette is not neutral in the immediate environment. With it emitting odour and a bit of smoke it can really bother some people,’ Mr Digard told local radio station France Bleu Cotentin.”

Ukraine protests increase risks of currency crisis

“Massive protests against Viktor Yanukovich hammered Ukraine’s financial markets on Monday, increasing the risk of a currency crisis as the president tries to hold on until an election in early 2015.  Ukraine’s debt insurance costs jumped and currency traders increased bets on a devaluation after 350,000 people protested on Sunday against Yanukovich’s decision to ditch a trade pact with the European Union.  Central bank Governor Ihor Sorkin backed up foreign exchange intervention by vowing to do everything needed to uphold financial stability. In an online video message, he urged savers ‘to be confident in the banking system’ and not to withdraw their deposits.”

The Reason Police Brutality Is Rising

“The great fiction of government is imploding. What is left is the great reality; namely that all government intervention rests upon coercion..  Law enforcement will increase its use of direct force to compel obedience and to create a fear of authority to fill the vacuum where respect used to be. The rise in police brutality against average people is proportionate to the loss of trust with which those people now view all government intervention. It is a vicious circle, of course. The more brutality occurs, the less trust there is. And law enforcement’s willingness to taser children, shoot unarmed civilians and gang-bludgeon unresisting people is an ominous sign. It means they are no longer reluctant to be ‘seen.'”

12 Medical marijuana miracles you should know about

“2. This recent documentary follows a family trying to care for their daughter Charlotte who has Dravet Syndrome (a severe untreatable form of epilepsy). She also has attention deficit disorder. At 2 years old, her parents had tried all recommended meds and some of them nearly killed her. She was having 50 seizures a night. Sometimes, 300 a week! She was catatonic. Doctors wanted to put her into a medically induced coma. At 5 she managed to get a medical marijuana card in Colorado.  Upon starting her first dose of high CBD oil, her seizures stopped immediately, and there were no more seizures at all that day or night. She came out of her state and her parents got to meet her for the first time.”

Merkel’s party opposes Europe referendums, German lawmaker says

“German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s Christian Democrats (CDU) are against the idea of holding referendums on major European policy decisions, as proposed in coalition talks, because this would undermine parliamentary democracy, a senior CDU lawmaker said on Tuesday.  CDU deputy parliamentary leader Guenter Krings, reacting to a document draw up in talks with the Social Democrats on forming a coalition government, told Spiegel magazine’s website: ‘The CDU’s position is clear: we oppose undermining parliamentary lawmaking.’  The document recommends voting on policy decisions that involve transferring powers to Brussels or committing money at EU level.”

38,000 Australians take ANZ bank to Federal Court over banking fees

“The largest consumer class action in Australian history begins in the Federal Court in Melbourne today as 38,000 ANZ customers appeal over the bank’s fees.  Law firm Maurice Blackburn is taking the action on behalf of ANZ customers, with the court set to examine whether the fees are fair or whether they are excessive and therefore illegal.  A High Court decision last year paved the way for the trial in the Federal Court.  Maurice Blackburn has the financial backing of publicly listed litigator IMF.  Andrew Watson, the head of class actions at Maurice Blackburn, says the fees are not an accurate reflection of the costs faced by banks when customers are caught out.”

Inside America’s Plan to Kill Online Privacy Rights Everywhere

“The United States and its key intelligence allies are quietly working behind the scenes to kneecap a mounting movement in the United Nations to promote a universal human right to online privacy, according to diplomatic sources and an internal American government document obtained by The Cable.  The diplomatic battle is playing out in an obscure U.N. General Assembly committee that is considering a proposal by Brazil and Germany to place constraints on unchecked internet surveillance by the National Security Agency and other foreign intelligence services. American representatives have made it clear that they won’t tolerate such checks on their global surveillance network.”
