“Tthe US and South Korea held a three day naval exercise last month that included, among many other warships, an American nuclear-powered submarine. This month, the US and South Korea are conducting another joint military exercise, this time with the US flying nuclear-capable B-52 bombers over the Korean peninsula.  Much of the current escalation came after the US drew up yet another set of sanctions for the UN Security Council to impose on North Korea.  The North Korean government retaliated against the new sanctions with bellicose threats to launch a nuclear first strike against the US.  The US response to the threats has been entirely predictable.”

CIA helping boost arms shipments to Syria rebels

“Arab nations and Turkey, helped by the CIA, have dramatically increased military aid to Syrian rebels in recent months, The New York Times reported Monday, citing air traffic data and interviews with unnamed officials and the rebel commanders.  The airlift has grown to include more than 160 military cargo flights by Jordanian, Saudi and Qatari military-style cargo planes landing at Esenboga Airport near Ankara, and at other Turkish and Jordanian airports, the report said.  US intelligence officers have helped the Arab governments shop for weapons and vetted rebel commanders and groups to determine who should receive the weapons as they arrive.”

Former S.C. Republican official: ‘C*cksucker’ anti-war vet should have ‘come home in a body bag’

“The former head of the South Carolina Republican Party on Sunday lashed out at an Iraq war veteran who now opposes the war, saying that he should have ‘come home in a body bag.’  In a series of tweets, former South Carolina GOP executive director Todd Kincannon blasted Iraq war veteran Michael Prysner over tweets last week defending former Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez and the assertion that an American police officer was a ‘coward and a sociopath.'”

Chinese fish vendor finds live bomb inside squid’s stomach

“For one fish vendor in the Guangdong province of China, the catch of the day came with an explosive surprise, as he found a live bomb inside a squid he was preparing for a customer.  The Daily Mail reported that Huang found the eight-inch bomb while gutting the squid, then called police.  Authorities detonated the bomb with a controlled explosion away from the market and speculated that it might have been dropped from a fighter jet, but did not say how old it was, or where it originated.”

If Putin feels Russian financial losses in Europe are unjust, I don’t doubt for one minute that he would threaten to retaliate by ‘turning the lights out’ in Europe.  War and massive civil unrest in many parts of the world is a very real threat. And it’s already starting to impact the financial markets.”

“What we are seeing, as in Greece, is the response to the effort to make the public responsible for the mistake of private banks.  In Greece they forced the people to have wages cut, pensions cut, social services cut, public assets sold off, in order to cover the losses of banks.  If they don’t stand with the people, there will be more political and social unrest and more discrediting of governments.  What’s happening is governments are revealing that, even if they are democratically elected governments, they do not represent the people.  They only represent a very few, very powerful folks.  This of course destroys any confidence in democracy.  That’s the biggest crisis.”

Retired EPA attorney leads the opposition to ‘smart meters’ in Maryland

“Tea partiers and Green Partiers, liberal Californians and conservative Texans have argued that the meters can cause health problems, or can be hacked, or give utilities too much information about customers’ daily lives, or can overheat and cause fires, or underdeliver on financial benefits. The attorneys general of Connecticut, Illinois and Michigan have said in the past few years that smart-meter plans in their states do not clearly benefit consumers, given the multimillion-dollar installation costs.  BGE, which began installing smart meters last year and expects to finish in 2014, will have to ask for reimbursement of the $282 million not covered by a federal grant.”
