Comcast unveils 2-gigabit fiber internet service for $300/mo

“Comcast will charge $299.95 per month for its 2Gb symmetrical service (2 Gb/s down, 2 Gb/s up) on its Web page, following a rollout earlier this year that neglected to note what Comcast would charge you for the service. As of today, the service is available in the San Francisco Bay Area and other parts of California, plus Atlanta, Chicago, Detroit, Miami and nearby areas.  The service comes with a number of caveats: First, you’ll need to live within a half-mile of Comcast’s metro fiber network—which presumably won’t be a problem if you live in the supported cities.  The catch is the installation fee—$500 according to the fine print, the Verge discovered—and another $500 for the activation fee.”

It Was the First Time the CIA Overthrew a Government…

“In 1979, 26 years after Operation Ajax, a popular uprising overthrew the Shah. A power struggle ensued, and Ayatollah Khomeini’s Islamist forces prevailed. The Islamic Republic of Iran was born. This time, it was an anti-American government that came to power. Decades of animosity followed, and it continues to this day.  It’s unthinkable to most that the Islamic Republic of Iran could offer any sort of investment opportunity. Many find the mere mention of the country distasteful.  There’s another country that most would have considered unthinkable to invest in at one time. Many got hot under the collar just at the mention of its name too: the People’s Republic of China.”

Should Defendants With Frozen Assets Have Right To Hire Lawyers?

“The Supreme Court took up a case Monday concerning whether the government can deny criminal defendants untainted money they need to hire an attorney of their choice.  In petitions urging the Supreme Court to take up the case, legal experts argued that the justices should consider whether Luis’ Sixth Amendment right to hire counsel of her choice should outweigh prosecutorial efforts to recover the full value of the alleged fraud.  Last year, the court’s justices ruled that indicted defendants do not have a right to challenge the forfeiture of their assets at a hearing in order to hire attorneys to defend them.”

A Motel-Sized Victory for Privacy at the Supreme Court

“It’s worth stepping back to think through the logic embraced by Los Angeles, the LAPD, a district court, a Ninth Circuit dissent, and now, four dissenting Supreme Court justices. All seem comfortable with something that wasn’t addressed directly: the notion that hotel and motel guests have no right to privacy in information that they voluntarily turn over to third parties, per Smith v. Maryland.  The third-party information precedent is problematic on its own.  But it is devastating to privacy  when paired with laws that compel businesses to collect detailed information on customers and to turn it over to police without warrants, destroying the ability to enter voluntary transactions that include discretion.”

Feds Cry Wolf, Again

the-daily-bell-top-logo61

“Why has the FBI said nothing about these alleged arrests? Whom did they arrest, on what evidence, and what criminal charges followed? We don’t know and the FBI won’t say. In the United States, all arrests are supposedly public record. Federal law enforcement agencies must present prisoners to a magistrate within 72 hours of arrest. News media routinely watch court blotters for anything of interest. A July 4 terrorism plot would certainly have been interesting. Yet we heard nothing about such arrests. You can bet the feds would be chest thumping if they had busted any remotely plausible plots. So what happened? We have several possibilities.”

Freedom or the Slaughterhouse? The American Police State from A to Z

AGOW_SMALL1

“Despite the best efforts of some to sound the alarm, the nation is being locked down into a militarized, mechanized, hypersensitive, legalistic, self-righteous, goose-stepping antithesis of every principle upon which this nation was founded. All the while, the nation’s citizens seem content to buy into a carefully constructed, benevolent vision of life in America that bears little resemblance to the gritty, pain-etched reality that plagues those unfortunate enough to not belong to the rarefied elite. For those whose minds have been short-circuited into believing the candy-coated propaganda peddled by the politicians, here is an A-to-Z, back-to-the-basics primer of what life in the USA is really all about.”

Man Threatened By SF Cops For Holding ‘John 3:16’ Sign in Front of Ballpark

AGOW_SMALL1

“In filing suit in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California on behalf of Gino Emmerich, Rutherford Institute attorneys charge that police officers violated Emmerich’s right to free speech and assembly when they forcefully removed him from Willie Mays Plaza, surrounded him and threatened him with arrest if he did not cease displaying his ‘John 3:16’ sign. Institute attorneys point out that Emmerich was in no way causing a disruption in the plaza, the baseball stadium known as ‘AT&T Park,’ or any other business or agency in the area, nor was he acting in a criminal manner. Moreover, other people in the plaza were displaying signs and communicating messages.”

New York Agrees to Pay $5.9 million to Settle Case of Eric Garner

“Making taxpayers shell out for abuses committed by officers does nothing to pressure departments to reform their use of force. The costs are hidden and dispersed among all taxpayers, and even if a few people read about it in the paper and are annoyed, they don’t have the incentive (or even the mechanism) to force the police department to change officers’s incentives or hold them accountable.  That’s just the way government bureaucracies and unions like it. The problem here is the doctrine of ‘qualified immunity,’ which shields police officers from being held liable for violating people’s rights.”

By the Numbers: Does Immigration Cause Crime?

“Both the Census-data driven studies and macro-level studies find that immigrants are less crime-prone than natives with some small potential exceptions.  There are numerous reasons why immigrant criminality is lower than native criminality. One explanation is that immigrants who commit crimes can be deported and thus are punished more for criminal behavior, making them less likely to break the law.  Another explanation is that immigrants self-select for those willing to work rather than those willing to commit crimes. According to this ‘healthy immigrant thesis,’ motivated and ambitious foreigners are more likely to immigrate and those folks are less likely to be criminals.”

Trumpism: The Ideology

“For now, Trump seems more like comedy than reality. I want to laugh about what he said, like reading a comic-book version of Franco, Mussolini, or Hitler. And truly I did laugh, as when he denounced the existence of tech support in India that serves American companies (‘how can it be cheaper to call people there than here?’ — as if he still thinks that long-distance charges apply).  Let’s hope this laughter doesn’t turn to tears.  So, what does Trump actually believe? He does have a philosophy, though it takes a bit of insight and historical understanding to discern it.”
