What is even stranger is that the strikes are being organized by Tsipras’s own party … Syriza, to protest its own government.  Few actual steps have been taken to implement the list of EU demands, except for raising the VAT to 23%, further strangling an economy that is on its last breath. The banks successfully completed a capital raise of €14.4 billion.  Now that the banks have raised their funds, they are finally [admitting] just how bad the NPL problem really is.”

Greece passes more spending cuts, tax hikes after third EU bailout

“The approved budget makes 5.7 billion euros ($6.2 billion) in spending cuts and gathers 2 billion euros in higher taxes. The cuts include 1.8 billion euros from pensions and 500 million from defense.  There have been strikes by public and private workers over the austerity and restructuring reforms sought by the EU as part of the financial bailout aimed at keeping Greece in the eurozone.  Greece’s debt is forecast to grow to 327.6 billion euros or 188 percent of gross domestic product (GDP) from 180% in 2015. Tsipras, who came to power in January promising to defend Greeks from EU-imposed cuts and was then re-elected in September, described the budget’s passage as a ‘difficult exercise.'”

Fed ends ‘too big to fail’ lending to collapsing banks, with caveats

“The Fed’s new restrictions come from the Dodd-Frank Act of 2010, which brought in a wave of reforms after the financial crisis.  Under the new rule, banks that are going bankrupt — or appear to be going bankrupt — can no longer receive emergency funds from the Fed under any circumstances.  However, it’s important to note that the new rule allows the Fed to judge by its own measures whether a firm qualifies for its emergency aid.  The idea is the Fed can still lend to banks during times of emergency, but the bank must be able to pay it back. Yet the true health of a bank in turmoil can be very difficult to assess.”

And officers in Louisiana had answers about the death of Jeremy Mardis on November 3.  Yet almost none of that turned out to be true.  The officers in Jeremy Mardis’s shooting were subject to multiple complaints about their fitness for duty. One was allegedly in a personal conflict with Chris Few. And police officials have now said that they were lying about almost every relevant point of the pursuit and shooting.”

Boston commuter train travels 5 miles without operator

“A Boston area-commuter train carrying about 50 passengers — but no operator — coasted through several stations after power to a third rail was cut off once officials realized no one was at the controls, authorities said Thursday.  The incident, which saw the train go 5 miles, began at 6:08 a.m. at the Braintree station on the MBTA’s Red Line, south of Boston, when the operator apparently stepped off the train to inspect a signal that was experiencing a problem, said Gov. Charlie Baker.  The governor said while he understood ‘the fear, the shock and surprise that … passengers must have experienced,’ commuters should not be afraid to ride the rails.”

State of Emergency Declared in Michigan City After Lead Found in Children’s Blood

“Flint River is one of the filthiest rivers in Michigan. Over the years, it has housed raw sewage, tires, old refrigerators — which residents have attempted to sift out — and lead. In spite of this, officials declared it safe to drink in April 2014, when they switched the supply to the tainted river.  The change was widely attributed to the city’s switch from Detroit’s water system to the Flint River under the leadership of the city’s previous mayor, Dayne Walling.  Shortly after the April switch, residents complained the water emitted a foul odor and was cloudy in appearance, but local and state officials insisted the water was safe.”

Congress adds contested cybersecurity measures to ‘must-pass’ spending bill

“Congress added some of the most controversial parts of the latest cybersecurity bill to its gigantic end-of-year ‘must-pass’ omnibus spending package, including mandatory sharing of any consumer data it collects with the Internal Revenue Service, FBI and the National Security Agency.  Civil liberties experts said they were dismayed that Congress had used the late-night bill to pass some of the most invasive parts of the Cybersecurity Information Sharing Act (Cisa).  Language that would have prevented consumer financial data from being shared directly with the NSA, for example, is not in the final version of the bill.”
