“Colchicine can be used to treat gout, Behcet’s disease, pericarditis, and the Mediterranean fever. It has been in use as a medicine for over 3,000 years.  In the summer of 2009, the Food and Drug Administration approved Colcrys as a treatment for gout flare-ups and the Mediterranean fever. The FDA gave pharmaceutical company URL Pharma an exclusive marketing agreement for selling Colcrys in exchange for completing studies on Colcrys and paying the FDA a $45 million application fee.  This deal effectively created a patented drug with no generic alternative. URL Pharma immediately raised the price from less than a dime to nearly $5 dollars per pill.”

Obamacare is Eliminating My Health Insurance

“I now find myself in the absurd position of losing my health insurance because the professional liars and thieves in D.C. have dictated that everyone have health insurance!  I had health insurance, but, thanks to constant meddling by the idiots in D.C., I am not only losing the insurance policy that I had, but I am also losing even the possibility of purchasing an insurance policy that suits my needs and my business’s needs.   I now have the choice of going without health insurance altogether (and paying a $95 fine to the morons who eliminated my insurance policy in the first place), or I can purchase an insurance policy that will be horrendously more expensive than I can afford.”

Court could declare Obamacare subsidies illegal in 34 states

“Under the Affordable Care Act, subsidies are only available for state exchanges. But through regulation the Internal Revenue Service has extended subsidies to federal exchanges too.  Several groups are challenging the federal subsidies. Judge Friedman ruled that their case could go forward, disappointing the administration. The Justice Department argued that the court should throw out the case because the plaintiffs had no standing. After the judge’s ruling, the plaintiffs are standing tall.  Family plans will cost $20,000 a year in 2016, according to the IRS. If Americans on the federally run exchanges do not qualify for health-insurance subsidies, few will sign up.”

“First Lady Michelle Obama’s Princeton classmate is a top executive at the company that earned the contract to build the failed Obamacare website.  Toni Townes-Whitley, Princeton class of ’85, is senior vice president at CGI Federal, which earned the no-bid contract to build the $678 million Obamacare enrollment website at Healthcare.gov. CGI Federal is the U.S. arm of a Canadian company.  Townes-Whitley and her Princeton classmate Michelle Obama are both members of the Association of Black Princeton Alumni.”

Insurance Executives Meet With Obama Staff on Fixing Health Exchange

“The heads of WellPoint Inc. (WLP), Aetna Inc. and at least 10 other insurers met with the Obama administration to discuss correcting flaws in how data from the U.S. health-care marketplaces is transferred to the companies. ‘Alpha teams’ of technology workers at the insurance companies and in the government ‘are working side-by-side to correct challenges,’ the White House said today in a statement. The administration didn’t provide additional details about the meeting, which included Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius and White House Chief of Staff Denis McDonough.”

Oklahoma town bans e-cigarettes on public property

“Inclusion of an ’emergency’ provision in the legislation had limited public notice of the true intent of the proposal.  Both Conley and Gore said the inclusion of e-cigarettes is a response to the grant-making process of the state Tobacco Settlement Endowment Trust and Oklahoma Turning Point, both of which are encouraging communities to ban or limit tobacco-free products.  Across the nation, local anti-tobacco groups have been moving against non-tobacco products like e-cigarettes in response to the grant incentives. Late Wednesday, Ada’s public relations office had not responded to a request for comment on the new legislation.”

Workers At Canadian Obamacare Contractor Getting Sick and Fainting

“The largest contractor is CGI Federal Inc., the U.S. unit of a Canadian firm CGI Group (GIB). It received $88 million through last March 31. Its original $93.7 million contract runs through December, with three one-year option periods still possible.  A company spokeswoman said the terms of the contract prevent it from speaking about the details of its work. [..] The healthcare.gov debacle has taken its toll on the working environment at CGI Federal’s 10-story complex in Fairfax, Va., according to a staffer working on a related project who asked not to be named.”

UK doctors given bonuses for placing patients on ‘death lists’

“Doctors have been given bonuses for drawing up ‘end-of-life advanced care plans’ for patients they predict will die within a year.  The payments in question apparently have the intention of keeping NHS costs as low as possible.  A ‘key objective’ of the project – which underwent a trial period in England’s east – was ‘to shift the place of death’ away from hospitals, thus ‘reducing …healthcare costs.’  The ‘Yellow Folder’ pilot scheme was trialed in 41 medical practices in Ipswich and East Suffolk, and lasted from July 2011 until last month. The doctors received payment for every care home patient they successfully signed up to an end of life plan.”
