Hiroshima: Lincoln’s Legacy to Civilians

portallogo3

“Truman had two choices: drop the two bombs or else abandon unconditional surrender as civilian policy governing the military. He was unwilling to drop unconditional surrender, just as Lincoln had been unwilling to drop it in the summer of 1864. So, he decided to escalate the war on civilians.  The main criterion of conditional surrender for Japan would have been the maintenance of the Emperor’s formal control, at least officially, over Japan. That was exactly what Truman unofficially gave to Japan. American military forces did not bomb his residence during the firebombings of Tokyo. After the war, he was not removed from command.”

Sheldon Richman: Truman, A-Bombs and the Killing of Innocents

“Nothing can justify what Truman did – neither revenge for the Japanese attack on the U.S. naval fleet at Pearl Harbor nor avoidance of a U.S. invasion of Japan. (Truman first justified the bombings in terms of vengeance.) Top American military leaders – Eisenhower, MacArthur, and Leahy among others – opposed the bombings. The estimate of American casualties in an invasion have been grossly exaggerated. Truman’s Secretary of State James Byrnes said the death rate would be in the thousands. But even if we accept the high guesses, why was the slaughter of Japanese noncombatants preferable to the deaths of military personnel?”

Ron Paul’s Foreign Policy of Peace Is Central to the Message of Freedom

“Ron calls upon the peoples of the world to resist their governments’ calls to war and to refuse to take part in violent conflict. ‘If the authoritarians continue to abuse power in spite of constitutional and moral limits,’ he writes, ‘the only recourse left is for the people to go on strike and refuse to sanction the wars and thefts. Deny the dictators your money and your bodies…. The more this is a worldwide movement, the better.’ When people read Swords into Plowshares generations from now – and they will – they will marvel that such a man actually served in the US Congress, and defied every campaign of war propaganda right on the House floor.”

Rand Paul Endorses Military Action Against Iran

“This is in some respects the worst position Paul could take. He acknowledges that attacking Iran won’t actually prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon if that is what their government is intent on doing, but he still backs military action for the sake of ‘prevention.’ More to the point, Paul is endorsing preventive–and therefore unnecessary–war as an acceptable and appropriate policy. If there are still any Paul supporters that have been trying to find a silver lining in the senator’s increasingly hawkish foreign policy positions, this should be enough to persuade them to stop trying.”

Big U.S. coal miner Alpha Natural files for bankruptcy

“The move comes as President Barack Obama is expected to unveil tough new measures to cut greenhouse gas emissions from coal-fired power plants.  Alpha blamed its Chapter 11 bankruptcy on tougher regulatory standards and policies that favor renewable energy, as well tumbling prices for its coal.  Alpha is the world’s third-largest supplier of metallurgical coal used in making steel and has also been hit by a slowdown in China.  Walter Energy Inc and Patriot Coal Corp also filed for bankruptcy protection this year. Energy Future Holdings Corp, a power company that also has a large coal mining business, has been in bankruptcy since 2014.”

Obama announces new power plant regulations, to cost $8.4 billion

“In its fact sheet, the White House argues the new rules will create tens of thousands of jobs while ensuring grid reliability.  According to the White House, if the rule is implemented in all 50 states, the average American family can save $85 on their annual energy bill in 2030, though critics say it will raise energy bills.  EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy, drew from her Boston background and called the rollout ‘an especially wicked-cool moment.’  A day earlier, she said the rule would result in an estimated annual cost of $8.4 billion by 2030 and have total benefits, including public-health benefits, of $34 billion to $54 billion per year by then.”

Obama renewing call to reauthorize Export-Import Bank

“President Barack Obama is ramping up pressure on Congress to reauthorize the Export-Import Bank.  The obscure federal agency’s charter expired last month after lawmakers refused to reauthorize it. The bank underwrites loans to foreign companies purchasing American products, but conservatives call it corporate welfare.  Obama on Wednesday plans to meet at the White House with owners of small- and medium-size businesses that have benefited from the bank. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky has floated the possibility of attaching the bank’s reauthorization to a six-year highway and transit bill.”

Ron Paul: Iran Agreement Boosts Peace, Defeats Neocons

131203122616-ron-paul-bitcoin-620xa1

“Last week’s successfully concluded Iran agreement is one of the two most important achievements of an otherwise pretty dismal Obama presidency. Along with the ongoing process of normalizing relations with Cuba, this move shows that diplomacy can produce peaceful, positive changes. It also shows that sometimes taking a principled position means facing down overwhelming opposition from all sides and not backing down. The president should be commended for both of these achievements. The agreement has reduced the chance of a US attack on Iran, which is a great development. But the interventionists are organizing media and lobbying efforts to defeat the agreement.”

U.S. presidential election already fueled by $377 million

“The major parties’ top presidential candidates in the fundraising race – Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton and Republican Jeb Bush – are collecting cash in the huge amounts needed to fuel the extensive political organizations they are building for the 2016 campaign.  Clinton’s campaign is spending money at a rapid clip, according to initial fundraising reports filed Wednesday with federal regulators.  The former first lady and front-runner in the Democratic race has paid out 40 percent of the $47 million in donations that she amassed by the end of June, employing some 364 people and building infrastructure across the country in preparation for next year’s general election.

Clinton’s Big Speech Leaves Uber and Airbnb’s Future in Limbo

“Clinton said she ‘vows to crack down on employers who misclassify workers as independent contractors.’ She also noted that the ‘so-called gig economy offers exciting opportunities but raises hard questions about workplace protections and what a good job will look like in the future’.  Clinton didn’t offer specifics, so we can’t say whether she’ll be a friend or foe to the sharing economy. But, her ambiguous statements make it hard for startups to plan for the future. Investors may be scared to bet on sharing economy businesses if their planned model gets met with resistance at the presidential level.”
