David Cameron knew UK pilots were bombing Isis in Syria

“David Cameron knew UK pilots were involved in US-led bombing missions of Isis targets in Syria, even though parliament had expressly rejected British military involvement in the country in 2013.  The prime minister’s spokeswoman said on Friday that up to a dozen pilots had been involved since September, but they were not operating under a British chain of command. ‘The PM was aware that UK personnel were involved in US operations and what they were doing.’ Details of British personnel’s involvement in strikes by allied nations’ forces were revealed by a freedom of information request by the pressure group Reprieve.”

Blogging about Cops Is Not a Crime – Even If You’re on Probation

“Darren Chaker was under supervised release when he wrote on his personal blog that Ms. Leesa Fazal, an investigator with the Nevada Attorney General’s Office, was ‘forced out’ of her previous post with the Las Vegas Police Department.  That statement, according to the district court ultimately overseeing Chaker’s probation, was a violation of the requirement that he ‘not … disparage or defame others on the internet’ — and so Chaker was returned to prison.  If the anti-disparagement provision of Chaker’s supervised release becomes widespread, it could easily stifle valuable speech by activists and others.”

California pushes 350-foot no-fly drone law; government exempt

“The drone wars are heating up in California as legislators move to ban unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) from flying within 350 feet above property ground level without the operators having received express permission.  Senate Bill 142 contains an exemption for lawful flights of government and law enforcement drones.  In other words, you can consider it a proposed ban on private and commercial UAV use – a dismal prospect for companies such as Amazon, with its plans to fill the sky with delivery drones; Google, with its own drone delivery service; and GoPro, the body-wearable camera maker that recently announced it was making its own drone.

Don’t Agree with the Mayor’s Politics? No Permits for You!

“Boston mayor Martin Walsh gives Donald Trump the Chick-Fil-A rush over his immigration opinions. If Donald Trump ever wants to build a hotel in Boston, he’ll need to apologize for his comments about Mexican immigrants first, the Hub’s mayor said.  ‘I just don’t agree with him at all,’ Boston Mayor Martin J. Walsh told the Herald yesterday.  ‘I think his comments are inappropriate. And if he wanted to build a hotel here, he’d have to make some apologies to people in this country.'”

Should Defendants With Frozen Assets Have Right To Hire Lawyers?

“The Supreme Court took up a case Monday concerning whether the government can deny criminal defendants untainted money they need to hire an attorney of their choice.  In petitions urging the Supreme Court to take up the case, legal experts argued that the justices should consider whether Luis’ Sixth Amendment right to hire counsel of her choice should outweigh prosecutorial efforts to recover the full value of the alleged fraud.  Last year, the court’s justices ruled that indicted defendants do not have a right to challenge the forfeiture of their assets at a hearing in order to hire attorneys to defend them.”

Philip Giraldi: Where Are They Now?

“The United States already has by far the per capita largest prison population of any developed country but I am probably one of the few Americans who on this Independence Day would like to see a lot more people in prison, mostly drawn from politicians and senior bureaucrats who have long believed that their status makes them untouchable, giving them license to steal and even to kill. The sad fact is that while whistleblowers have been imprisoned for revealing government criminality, no one in the federal bureaucracy has ever actually been punished for the crimes of torture, kidnapping and assassination committed during the George W. Bush and Barack H. Obama presidencies.”

Ecuador launches new digital currency after banning competitors

“The new system, which is officially set to launch on Thursday, will work much like mobile phone bank payments in other countries: users will be able to exchange hard cash for digital money which is stored in an electronic wallet on their phones.  As with other mobile payment programmes, text messages will allow users to make payments to other accounts, but what makes this plan different is that this is the first time a national government will have full control; everything from the creation of new units to securing the system against attack will be managed by the Central Bank of Ecuador.  The bill that authorized the digital dollar also banned Bitcoin and other digital currencies.”

The End Game, or Just a Pause?

“In true dramatic fashion, the Greek government submitted an 11th-hour proposal late yesterday that meets most creditor demands, in exchange for a new 53.5 billion euro bailout … Greece’s third since 2011.  In fact, details of the proposal, including spending cuts, pension reform and tax hikes, are nearly identical to the offer made by European creditors way back on June 26, which was summarily rejected by the Greek government, and then by voters in a July 5 referendum.  Hmm … the more things change, the more they stay the same.”

Brunei Darussalam looks to a new stock bourse to diversify economy

“Plans to launch a stock exchange in Brunei Darussalam by 2017 will bolster its capital markets in line with plans for regional market integration as well as aid the broader drive to diversify its economy away from dependence on oil and gas.  Brunei Darussalam and Myanmar are the last two Asean members without a stock exchange, but this is set to change shortly following Myanmar’s announcement that it intends to launch a bourse later this year.  Business leaders have welcomed the move, with around 12 major domestic firms potential candidates to list on the exchange.”

Ten Thousand Commandments 2015

“Federal regulation and intervention cost American consumers and businesses an estimated $1.88 trillion in 2014 in lost economic productivity and higher prices, amounting to an average of $14,976 per household – around 29 percent of an average family budget of $51,100. The ‘Unconstitutionality Index’ is the ratio of regulations issued by unelected agency officials compared to legislation enacted by Congress in a given year. In 2014, agencies issued 16 new regulations for every law—that’s 3,554 new regulations compared to 224 new laws. Some 60 federal departments, agencies and commissions have 3,415 regulations in development at various stages in the pipeline.”
