“The United States judicial system is ostensibly built on laws and hard facts. But new research lends weight to the trope that ‘justice is what the judge ate for breakfast.’ A judge’s willingness to grant a prisoner parole wanes with time after a lunch or snack break, according to an observational study. Researchers from Columbia University and Ben Gurion University of the Negev in Israel analyzed more than 1,000 parole decisions made during 50 days by eight experienced judges in Israel. The proportion of favorable rulings fell from about 65 percent to nearly zero during each session separated by the two food breaks, leaping back to 65 percent immediately after the breaks.”

Man charged in rape that another man spent 13 years in prison for
“The Cleveland County District Attorney’s Office has charged a suspect in a 32-year-old case of rape for which another man was wrongfully convicted and spent more than 13 years in prison. In 1996, after more than 13 years behind bars, Webb fought for DNA testing, and the test excluded him as the rapist in the case. He was released from prison. For 18 years, police didn’t arrest another suspect, leaving both Webb and the victim in the case in the dark about who had committed the crime that scarred their lives.”

Comply with California water-saving rules, get fined for brown lawn
“On the same day the state approved mandatory outdoor watering restrictions with the threat of $500 fines, the Southern California couple received a letter from their city threatening a $500 penalty for not watering their brown lawn. It’s brown because of their conservation, which, besides a twice-a-week lawn watering regimen, includes shorter showers and larger loads of laundry. They’re encouraged by the state’s new drought-busting, public service slogan: Brown is the new green. The city of Glendora sees it differently. Residents are caught in the middle of conflicting government messages as the need for conservation clashes with the need to preserve attractive neighborhoods.”
The Prison Industry in the United States: A New Form of Slavery?
“For the tycoons who have invested in the prison industry, it has been like finding a pot of gold. They don’t have to worry about strikes or paying unemployment insurance, vacations or comp time. All of their workers are full-time, and never arrive late or are absent because of family problems; moreover, if they don’t like the pay of 25 cents an hour and refuse to work, they are locked up in isolation cells. There are approximately 2 million inmates in state, federal and private prisons throughout the country. According to California Prison Focus, ‘no other society in human history has imprisoned so many of its own citizens.'”
A Ceasefire in the IRS’ War on US Citizens?
“Effective immediately, expats who agree to disclose their foreign accounts and pay US taxes for the previous three years won’t need to pay any penalties. They’ll owe just back taxes and interest (if any). The IRS even extended an olive branch to resident Americans. They’ll be able to come forward and disclose their offshore accounts for the previous three years and pay only a 5% penalty, not 27.5%. If the IRS decides your failure to comply with these obligations was willful, you could be socked with a 50% penalty. In addition, a recent US court decision made it clear that the 50% penalty could be imposed for each year you had an undisclosed international account.”

Homeland Security Orders 1000s Of Briefs for Detained Immigrants
“If you’re in the underwear-selling business, you’ve got a customer in the Department of Homeland Security. Homeland Security is looking to buy thousands of pairs of men’s, from size medium to 6X-large. (Who knew such a size existed?) A solicitation posted earlier this month by Immigrations and Customs Enforcement explains that the department is looking to buy 3,500 pairs of men’s underwear. The order is to be sent to El Paso. As seen on CBS’ website, Breitbart reported ICE has recently had an influx of detained immigrants awaiting deportation.”
Wrongly imprisoned former Tulsan cleared by DNA sues city
“A former Tulsa man who served about 16 years in prison on robbery and burglary convictions before being paroled and eventually cleared of wrongdoing sued the city of Tulsa and others in Tulsa federal court Monday. Sedrick Courtney, who now lives in Stephens County, claims in his lawsuit that city officials used manufactured evidence to convict him and then obstructed his exoneration efforts while he was in prison and on parole. The 41-page complaint also claims that Courtney for years after his imprisonment had requested access to evidence that he believed would clear him through DNA testing.”
When Obama Told the Truth About Gitmo . . . and Then Forgot
“Obama just sent five Gitmo prisoners back to Afghanistan in exchange for an American soldier who may have deserted. Drudge fills the page with stories. The entire focus is on the American. What about the five released prisoners, who never received a trial? Obama is at long last pulling troops out of Afghanistan, yet he is still holding prisoners captured in Afghanistan, who were never given a trial. If the war is over, shouldn’t we close Guantánamo? ‘Never,’ Republicans say. ‘This is a great way to spend our tax dollars. This is America’s version of Castro’s concentration camps in Cuba. We deserve one, too!'”

Here’s One Fight Uncle Sam Can’t Win
“Economic citizenship programs are proliferating. That’s something to celebrate. These programs are a bracing antidote to the increasing tendency of governments to impose travel restrictions against their citizens, using passports as weapons. This has long been the policy of authoritarian governments like North Korea and China. But in recent years, the US and UK have made much greater use of passport revocations and even involuntary loss of citizenship against persons they perceive as ‘enemies of the state.’ Is it really surprising that a market has arisen to deal with these draconian restrictions on one of humanity’s most basic rights, the right to leave one’s own country?”
3,200 Americans Serving Life Without Parole for Nonviolent Offenses
“The ACLU estimates that, of the 3,278 serving life without parole for nonviolent offenses, 65 percent are Black, 18 percent are white, and 16 percent are Latino, evidence of extreme racial disparities. Of the 3,278, most were sentenced under mandatory sentencing policies, including mandatory minimums and habitual offender laws that required them to be incarcerated until they die. The federal courts account for 63 percent of the 3,278 life-without-parole sentences for nonviolent offenses. The ACLU estimates that federal and state taxpayers spend $1.8 billion keeping these people in prison for life instead of more appropriate terms.”
